A Deeper range

I've never really had any formal singing lessons, I had a friend who used to give lessons she gave me a few pointers but I've never really been taught to sing officially, but I wondered if anyone can help me. I feel that I need to find a deeper range in my voice and I think that I would benefit from it. I'm a man, yet I sound slightly effemine when I sing, I don't think it's natural because I don't have that voice normally when speaking. I just would like the give it some depth and be able to add a lower tone to it. If anyone has any tips or knowledge on this subject, can you please help me? Even if this really isn't natural for me in the way I use my voice, I think it would help me to find a more natural way to use it, I would just like the option of having a deeper range or lower tone to work with. So if anyone has any thoughts on experimenting or exercising with that...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Mike.

Hi Mike, welcome to "the boards".

Two books highly recommended for you for review and study;

"Caruso's Method of Vocal Production", by Professor Marafioti.
"Set Your Voice Free", by Roger Love (includes exercise CD).

If you read either/both of them, you'll be well rewarded with many answers for your questions.

In the end...

You learn to use whatever gifts God gave you, and accepting that will free you up-compared to trying to be something you're not in terms of vocal tone. Meaning if you're a tenor, don't try to be a baritone, etc. (been there done that! :D)
You wouldn't expect Art Garfunkel to sound like Barry White, would you?

The fastest way to learn is through private lessons, although instuctional books are an excellent supplement.

Oops.
Should have said "instructional"-only proves I'm a singer too.
(we love to mess up the words)
