hi

this is my attempt at a dark piano interlude. a friend came up with the acoustic guitar, and I added keys and drums around it.

it's an instrumental.... and you may have to turn up the volume for maximum fright

any comments, advice, or humorous insults appreciated.

thanks

it's called C#minor www.nowhereradio.com/samij/singles

YOU ARE A FREAK B. SABBATH AND THIS IS A FREAKING GOOD PIECE.

I was liking the piano part, and I was going to say that it was a good mix, and that I liked the stereo width and the nice wind sounds, then "other part" came in. WICKED. Very wicked.

I love that melody. and the playing. I am going to download this one.

Funk on!

damn, dude....pretty incredible.

how did you get the voices?...what synth/patch?...just lovely, blackie:)

and you tinkle [the ivories] pretty decent too...as witnessed by the ending stuff...

thx dudes:cool:

I'd like to here any suggestions about how it can be improved.

the voices were from both a Roland JV 10-10 and an Alesis QS6.1 layered seperately, 3 stereo layers panned different. I have the Orchestral2 and Vintage synth expansion cards for the JV, and 4 exp. cards for the QS6.1. That was actually recorded on my old 4 track mini disc.......many bounces.

glad you thought it was cool.....any suggestions appreciated.

Sounds good. Whoa. The gothic Guitar part just kiccked in. Holey Moley! I gotta go find my cat...time for a sacrifice. Happy thoughts...Happy thoughts... :p

Sweet piece.

Cool......B sab....Sounds like it could be for a movie....especially the "gothic part" with the voice pad...it reminds me of the music from the movie "raising arizona" when the bad ass motorcycle dude comes in and starts shooting the small furry animals on the side of the road as he cruises :D

Seriously though....Very good...both musically and production wise....Really couldn't tell you how it could be better....sorry....

I liked it alot ..

Eeeeerie... Damn.. this is good. Now I'm REALLY impressed...

Intro sounds great. Reminds me of the music from the Diablo games, and strangely, it also reminds me of Supper's Ready by Genesis. When the heavy guitars come in, I was a little disappointed with the sound and panning of the drums, but the music itself is great. You have yet again proved to be quite a songwriter. Very gloomy and original. Sounds like a good soundtrack for a murder :)

Is that a flute I hear? Whatever it is, I like it. Damn, it just kicked in - really wasn't expecting this.... love the bells and piano playing. Very nice.

Sounds like a good soundtrack for a Stephen King book.

Kinda spooky, kinda nice. nice job Sam. I noticed a small amount of hiss when guitars came in.

Kick ass!!!

Very moody beginning!! I expected King Diamond to start singing any second once the song started kicking!!

Great work, I love it!!

Nice work, very strange again.
I'll comment more later after I listen again

Fangar- thanks bro, think happy thoughts

nave- now that you mention it, that does remind me of "Raising Arizona" thx

Meshuggah, thx man, I like your stuff too

Cranky One, appreciate the words, I have upgraded the drums to a RolandTD-8....this tune was an Alesis DM5. I'll e-mail you when the 'tyrant' recording begins.

Vurt- that was the flute from the Roland Jv. now I need a beer...thx for the listen

Charva- your right about the beginning hiss, that was a learning experience for me, BTW your tune 'marijuana polka,' is an instant classic in my book.

Shroud of Steel- cool username, I almosted added vocals to this that were very K.D.ish but I decided against it. glad you liked it.I look forward to hearing your tunes.

mrwilson-thx for the listen

hey mixmkr- about the voices, since I played it with two hands it's like 6 different voices............. and I actually used the dreaded "BBE Sonic Maximizer' on 2 of them, and the backwards stuff.

later

thx for checkin it out dudes...any and all comments are and were appreciated:cool:

I'll have to go back and check my expansion card voices, then...I've got the orchestral 1 and 2 and the vintage also for my Roland...but you got a GREAT sound there with the voices. lemme go back and listen, since your *begging* for advice:p

sabb...this is really good...so it's hard to come up with suggestions.

minor ideas...:
-maybe some crow sounds...other sound effects w/the wind in the beginning...I don't know! that might just be stupid.
-maybe, just before the wicked gtr stuff, let the acoutics "hang onto" the last note a little longer...or put a long verb tail to streachhhhhh it out. Let the last note dangle for a little more suspence.
-when the FIRST chord of the wicked gtrs hit, there is "something" on the attack of the first chord....like an edit?? or sumpin' Do you hear it? right @ 1:24...the first chord.
-and...maybe...during your last pno. diddlies....an unusual synth patch in the background....not to detract from the pno...but something else happening.

Your stuff is great how it keeps things fresh, with new sounds, sections. I like that. I could actually take a little more stuff..ala ear candy in the background, that you might catch on the 2nd, 3rd, etc..playing of the song. Just little stuff here and there, that plays a minor role, but something you'd appreciate when you put on the headphones. or spend some time 'really' listening to it close.

this is one of my favs from you.

oh...is that the kick drum off on the right side of the panorama?? A little strange, but hey...!!

Very well done. I could definately picture this in a film soundtrack. Catchy and clever.

Good work dude!

Slackmaster 2000

Nice tune...

A nice break away from the norm...

The mix sounds a bit squished..maybe just the drums and guitars though.

The overall mix could be a bit brighter in spots.

Nice work....

Slackmaster - thanks for the words, I know you don't comment on too many things, so your ears are especially appreciated...... and you already know how great I think your stuff is.

brokenwindow - I'm still learning about all this crazy stuff, and this was done on a four track mini disc. I have upgraded my recorder and hopefully the sound will get better, thanks for the comments and the listen

mixmkr - I tried to get the guitar player to re-do his parts but he couldn't seem to get it any better. I told him if he didn't, I would have to mix the guitar lower beacuse I didn't like the acoustic sound, and I thought he could have played it better. He did his parts in about 2 hours, and he gets very bored with recording because he thinks I take it a bit too seriously. I probably could have figured his part out and re-did it myself, but that wouldn't have been right because it was his acoustic idea that started this. He thought it was "good enough," and NOW he hears what I was talking about...... but it's too late.

I then spent MANY days trying to build stuff around it. That ending piano solo must have been 100 takes before I got something I could live with. I'm sure a REAL piano player could have nailed it in 5 minutes. I DO hear what your talking about at 1:24, but the only things I can do with this tune now is add more stuff, or e.q. it. I can't remix it because I sold that 4 track. This is one of about 40 songs sitting there. I appreciate the time you take to give such detailed responses, it really is priceless. The only reaction I get from my buddy's are, "cool tune," or "that sounds gay" or "how come you don't scream anymore?" or something like that, so thank you again bro!

Anyone who took the time to comment can always count on me for a listen, and comments on their songs.

For anyone who didn't comment, I will avoid your music like "the black plague"

thx again:D:cool:

So...are you going to mic up a bunch of crows then, and stick 'em in the beginning??:D

[kinda] seriously...

40 songs...you know...A lot of people have a bunch of stuff hanging around their closets (I happen to have a pile of 1/2 track tapes), that represent their "older" stuff, but already mixed, and potentially on a *lesser* sounding format/recording situation. 'You' have the urge (and I use the word "you" in the third person), to resurrect that stuff, and make it sound good, now that 'we' know what we are doing...In my case, most of my stuff is non-retrievable, and you chalk it up to a learning experience.
Specifically, sabb...you've got some serious writing chops and some playing talants as well. Not telling you what to do...of course!;) ...I say, write new stuff, cause it will 99% of the time be better...
In my case, I get the tendency to think it might be the 'best route' to try and save something...but I'm always wrong. Maybe rerecord the older stuff, if you really got something there that you like. Now you can add that new "synth" sound (since you now have bought a new keyboard...etc.) since the original recording.

and you didn't even ask my opinion about that...did ya??
