ok i have a digi 001 and was wondering were i would place a a/d converter???
my digi runs to card through a 15pin cable or something like that. I was told the a/d conversion sucks on these actually i was told the a/d d/a sucks but im just trying to figure out the first part still!!! i know it changes anlog signal to digital. But does this mean i have to run spdif???? im really lost in how and were i put this stuff as well as some good ones to buy???

You'll have to use either the S/PDIF or ADAT inputs. And I wouldn't say the converters "suck"; they're not the best, but not horrible either. I've heard some good recordings done on stock Digi 001's. If you get a good converter unit it will more than likely have a better clock than the Digi 001. You can set the 001 up to use an external clock signal from either the S/PDIF or ADAT input, which will make the converters in the 001 perform better as well. As far as manufacturers go, depends on how many channels you want. Apogee makes nice converters, as do RME, Lavry, Crane Song, Lynx, Lucid--it really depends on your budget.

8 channels

well i can run 8 channels through my lightpipe, so i really would like to get something with 8 channels maybe even with pres, But if i get one with pres can i run diffrent pres if disired??? like i found the m audio octane, any other units with or without pres that are 8 channel converters would be great and also were should i run my studio monitors from of my digi 001??? i have warferdale 8.2 monitors.

sorry

i am on a budget but i dont wana buy twice i seem to have done that alot!!!!

Run your monitors off the monitor or main analog outs from the 001. In terms of 8-channel interfaces--you'll have to increase your budget considerably to get something with converters much better than the stock 001's. RME and Apogee both make good ones. Not sure what all is available with pres in that range--you'll have to investigate that. If you get a converter with builtin pres it's unlikely you'll be able to use external preamps with it, unless it has selectable line level inputs. You might consider something like the Apogee Minime which has two-channels of good conversion, a good internal clock, and preamps which can be bypassed for line level inputs. It would interface to the 001 over the S/PDIF input and runs around $1200. For a comparable 8-channel interface you're looking at around $2,700 without the preamps.

are you recording now, and the digi001's converters holding you back?

do people hear your recordings and say "your converters suck'!

I doubt it, but maybe so.

my suggestion, get to work! learn what you got! there are no top level converers that contain preamps. once you start on this path there is no stopping. converters, pre's, mics, plugins, more storage.

start doing some small projects from start to finish on what you got. get some feedback, try out the mixing clinic. I doubt one in 1000 people can tell different sample rates on playback (oh, yeah, don't forget topflight monitors for thos super duper converters).

don't get trapped in the 'oh, i can't do this, till i get that'

never fear, you will always be able to drop 5 grand on your recording system in like 2 minutes. are you shooting elephants? then you probably don't need an elephant gun yet.

yea i just read that the digi 001 converters suck

wow i like the way you put that stuff and it makes alot of sence to me.
THANK YOU
I am gona focus on practicing more i am just a home recorder and am not recording nationla bands lol. So yea i will definetly work with the converters i got but i think i am gona upgrade my mics and pres cause i bought really cheap ones to start. I think im gona go with some rode mics (not sure what model yet mainly need drum overheads and vox mic) and im gona swoop a rnp preamp and rnc compressor cause all i got now is a dmp3 and stock digi pres!!!
any input on that stuff or does it sound like something i can do i mean im keeping my dmp3 and mics but i need more channels for drums anyway so i need another 2 channel preamp anyway and i heard a little compression on the way in can help smooth things out BUT NOT TO MUCH!!! i am really new to this but i figure i should have atleast 4 channels for drums and 2-4 for guitar and bass and vox.eats up my 8 channels i can run!!
