I have a 16trk adat setup and wanted some advice. I'm not ready to take the dive into recording on my computer.. I guess because I've NEVER owned a dependable computer..

Anyway, I've been looking at converters for a front end to my adats.. & I was wondering just how much of a difference this would make in my sound. I have the original blackface adats.. I've always thought the sound was ok, but I've read sooo much about the importance of converters, I think it might be a good investment.

2ndly, The bang for buck leader in my research is the midiman flying cow. Its under $300 & seems fine for my needs.. Anyone have any experience with this unit?

All feedback is appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey CUSETOWN, if you are happy with the sound of your ADATs I wouldn't bother with an A/D upgrade. The fact is that those blackface ADATs are really not going to be around for too much longer and it might be a waste to throw a bunch of money at them. Save up some money and spend it on a new Mackie, Alesis or TASCAM 24 track HD recorder.

Hd is definately the way to go, you can get something pretty descent for not much more than about 500.
Adat is going out of fashion like flares and l.a. gear, and I would strongly recomend learning protools or logic audio.
I'm not saying you should get rid of your adat setup but technology waits for no man.

Thanks but...

Nobody answered my question? Like I said.. I'm not interested in doin anything on the computer right now. I use it for editing and some sound design here & there.. Thats it. Don't get me wrong, If I could afford a mac & 24ch's of i/o, I'd be set.. But thats not $500.. I understand technology waits for no man.. But I don't think my creativity or sound quality is contingent upon it at all. Maybe convenience, but thats another story. Long story short I have a whole lot of outboard gear that I won't trade off for software based simulators. Just my way I guess.

Jake.. I know the whole.. If you're happy why change it.. Well... Its 'ok' .... I love my wife too, but I wouldnt complain if her tits were bigger! :)
If I WERE to change formats, which of course I will eventually, my choice would be analog. As far as the adats not being around much longer.. Well, They've outlasted about 5 computers and still faithfully do what I bought them to do.. So I can't complain.

Anyway, Thanks for the replies.. :)

sorry I should have been more specific, what I meant was you could get a decent enough Hard Disk recorder from E-bay or somewhere like it for not much more than £500 not $ I am fully aware you wont find a mac with 24 i/o for that money. why convert audio back and forwards between a/d ten times when it can be done once for cheaper? if you want analog you may as well get a reel 2 reel and use its warmth once you'v made your tracks.
I use mainly hardware but I wont refuse the next big thing just because its the next big thing... if the glove fits wear it.
