here is my delima! im thinking of investing say 3 grand on a new mixing setup either a stand alone digital mixer or an analog baord and out board a/d converters. my question is is there any way to test a/d converters? softwear hardwear i know ppl are gonna say use your ears but thats all good and great till your wanting to master a project and realise you limited yourself by the converters! esp if commerical sales is your goal so any help out there would be greatly apperciated thanks!

Yo Doulos:

Maybe BLUEBEAR would be able to give you a verbal answer{or one of many talented folks on this site;} however, if I were going to spend 3k on gear, I would want to see it, hear it, feel it, rub it, and have a knowledgeable representative tell what it will do and what it cannot do.

Green Hornet:D :p :p

Do a search, I have written quite some stuff on that in the past (god knows where it is :)

"3 grand on a new mixing setup" and "esp if commerical sales is your goal".

If commercial sales is your goal, you should be willing to invest a bit more than what 1 DAY in a big time studio costs eh? :) Of course, most mixes coming out in the last couple years sound like they came off of $3000 setup's, so maybe there is something to that! :D

I know of two channel A/D converters that cost twice the total you want to spend on a "mixing setup". These are the kind of converters you would find in studios where commercial products are normally produced. So, that is just some perspective you need to have. You have little budget to be worrying about comparing your gear to big time stuff. You have to make sonic sacrifices. You can't afford excellence.

With that said, just about any of the converters in your price range will work just fine. The main differences are going to be in bundled software, OS driver issues, and what type of connectors you want. Imagine how you want to work, and find a converter setup that has the features you need.

Creepy

3 grand is a bit tight. How many channels do you need? Are you going to mixdown with the board?

check out the LUCID for about 2gees and getta mackie 1604 for 1gee

creepy

Where can you get 16channels of Apogee convertors for 2 grand?

tex try sweetwater ad16 apogee 16 channel converters new your looking 2400 but i can get one for 1800

I would hardly call those good converters........but then...........
As I wrote before, I have done an at length article on how to test converters, all you have to do is go through the trouble of finding it in the archives :)

Buy the CD Lynn did on converters, hear for yourself and then make a decision on what converters are good or not. I woouldn't say the Apogee's are not good converters, but I wouldn't call them world class like Mytek converters (IMO).
Lynn Fuston has several CD's available on Mic's, Preamp and Converter comparisons, Mind you his facility is world class and everything is usually class A.

A 3 grand budget huh? Id go with a Yamaha AW44116, its about the best bargain budgets for getting started. When You move up to better gear you can always route it through a Mytek converter. The killer about converters is the additional cost associated with 1/2 decent clocks to sync it all....

$40 buck for a CD isn't alot when your about to spend 3 grand right :p

SoMm
