well im looking at three different interfaces (i won't be buying one of them for a while maybe like 5 months ill get one)

here are the choices ive been looking at (if you can list something that you think i should take a look at that is under 600 please let me know)

M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI Digital Audio System ........................ $400

TASCAM FW-1804 Rack FireWire Computer Interface .............. $600

PreSonus FIREPOD 10 Channel I/O FireWire Interface .............. $600

oh yeah one more question is it better to connect through firewire (Tascam and Presouns) or directly to a PCI card? (M-audio)

I have a delta 1010 (not LT) and have had no issues with it.

The internal PCI bus has far better bandwith and throughput than Firewire & USB2.0.

Another thing to remember; the PCI Bus is typically measured in Megabytes per second (MBps). The USB and FireWire Bus is typically measured in Megabits per second (Mbps) not MBps. FireWire 800 is listed at a Maximum Speed of ~100 MBps while PCI is listed at ~530 MBps.

This doesn't mean that the other options you've listed (other than the 1010)won't provide good results. I can't speak to the performance of those specific options but I can tell you that I've tried USB2.0 interfaces and found them to be unuseable do to latencies. I have experienced no such isuues with the PCI based 1010.

I'd recommend using the search function on this forman to see if there have been prior discussions on the equipment you are interested in.

Good luck.
