a compressor or a pre amp for my 488MKII?

i have a tascam 488MKII and a RODE NT1. i was thinking of getting either a pre amp or a compressor, can anyone give me the pros and cons of using pre amps and compressors with cassette recorders? and maybe some affordable models? much thanks.

Unless you are unhappy with the results of the micpres on the Tascam, I would say, for now to go with a compressor. Two good choices there would be the dbx 266 XL or Behringer Mastercom both around $150. The 266XL seems to be a little easier to use.

Besides just for use during recording, A compressor can be invaluable during mixdown (so get a stereo or dual mono one)

Then again, a good mic pre will make a world of difference. (the Art Tube MP at $99 is a good one at a great price)
