Hi--as you can tell by my post count, I am completely new to this forum.
I have a PII 266 mhz with 96 MB ram and a six gig drive. It has a standard compaq issued sound card and nothing else special. I want to set it up for home recording. I have a yamaha P80 keyboard (which rocks for the live player like myself who needs nothing but great piano and rhodes) and I want to expand a home studio quickly and efficiently.
I don't have any sounds available but I want to eventually records drum, bass, etc tracks so would I need a sampler. Basically I am completely ignorant to the whole process. thanks in advance....

Not sure you have enough power to get deep into the computer recording process, but either way, I would suggest you start out getting your feet wet in computer recording by purchasing either the N-Track Studio (4 tracks, price around 35.00) or the Cool Edit Pro (4 tracks, around 60.00). Personally, I would get the N-Track, see what your system can do with it...It's a great little 4 tracker, and there is a special section here devoted to N-track for users, so if you ever have any questions, someone can help you out.
Good luck!

Check out the Tascam US-428. It's a USB control surface with midi, SPDIF, and 4 analog inputs. It seems like a simple way to go.

Actually N-Track studio has an unlimited number of tracks, right? That's why it's called N-track studio and not 4-track studio.
:)

Good program for getting started, though.

welcome to the site walter.. hopefully your standard issue compaq soundcard isnt built into the motherboard , because if it is it succcksss .. i tried using the soundcard in my compaq and all it resulted in was clicks and pops... judging by the speed of your computer and its similarity to my old compaq , im gonna guess it has the same soundcard.. run out to compusa and pick up a 20 dollar pci soundcard.. even an el cheapo card will make an ENORMOUS difference than that crapaq stuff..

your computer isnt exactly up to snuff , but that doesnt mean you can have some fun with it.. take everyones advice on n track and check it out.. then be prepared to get bit by the recording bug and contemplate mortgaging your home for a studio.. ok , so maybe it wont happen that fast , but youll see.. :)

ps..where in cracktown are you from? i used to live there until i moved out to dope valley , im really starting to miss that place.. :(
