Sunday, my son Alex and I ran thru 8 new mics: Here are the test tracks, enjoy:

Hopefully, all the tracks are self-explanatory.

Not exactly scientific, but maybe helpful.

A quick couple of words about the above tracks:

These audio tracks are the recorded summaries of our mic testing. They're not the whole thing. I think the final results are pretty valid, at least in our studio, with our equipment.

Thanks Harvey!

These all do sound nice. It's good to get someone's description of each mic. It helps me to learn what I need to be listening for and how to describe what I want/need in a mic.

I do notice the T3 sound a bit richer than the Avant CK7. It would be nice to hear their CV12 compared to the T3.

Still thinking about the T3 as an addition to my TB1. The Avant CV12 might also be a contender.

Nice clips!

Thanks Harvey! Merry Christmas to you and your son! :D

BTW, Which was the signal chain used?

Straight into the MCI 556D board preamps. I listened to the mics on Sennheiser headphones and my son listened on our custom JBL monitors. All my comments were then fed to a Lucid 2496 A/D converter, straight to CD.

great test. the proximity really came across, as did the off axis stuff. very useful.

gotta love the MCI stuff. Learned on a "blackie" myself...when it was new.

Hey...JBL question.
I've been using YOUR 4311 since about the early 80's, and they are still going strong. ..the wbx models...the ones I think you said you don't like!! (vs the 4310...??)
If I want to upgrade, what should I be looking at? I can't seem to "comprehend" an 8" woofer...or is that "old school"?... and unless I unload $3k+, that's what you get, it seems. I don't want any dinky nearfields the size of a shoebox to thump my chest NOR a sub either. And before anyone jumps...yes I DO listen at 85dB (sometimes!)

I used to have some larger UREI's with the blue horns, but they were monsters. I wish I still had them. ...911 ...? Isn't that a porsche? ha!

Wow...thanks a lot! This is exactly the kind of thing that people will scour the internet for and probably never find.

What a thoughtful gift, indeed.....I feel bad since I didn't get you anything, lol.

Great stuff harvey! An added litle christmas gift there.

What you encoding the MP3's at?

I'm curious about the T3 Lundahl. Obviously Lundahl transformers will provide exceptional performance, as they are some of the best transformers in the world. Does this new T3 posses the old 3 micron 797 capsule, or the new 6 micron capsule with the slightly pinkish retainer ring. I have found that capsule to have a smoother top end (like I hear in that clip) but with a bit more color (in a very good way) and a nice strong midrange presence.

How much do you know about that? It sounds the best of all the samples to my ears. Very "up front" and as though it wouldn't require a lot of EQ at all.

Hopefully, Alan or Brent will stop in and fill us in on their two mics. I believe it's exactly the same as the standard T3 (which I love), but with the transformer output.

I also forgot to mention that the MXL V88 has a 32 mm diaphragm.

Thanks Harvey! Merry Christmas to you and your son. This thread is really helpful to someone like me who is still shopping for some cool mics. Is there any other threads that you have posted mic tests on?:D

Not with actual audio tracks. I've done informal "reviews" on a lot of low cost mics in the past, and put up sample tracks of bands using a particular mic, but this is the first time I've actually included sound clips of each mic during our testing.

Why not just add a powered sub to your JBL's? That's what I did. I didn't like the idea of adding a sub either, but it works and I don't have to adjust to a completely new system.

Phil,

I just went back through all my old info/literature and the specs on the T3 indicate it has always had a 6 micron capsule, there's no mention of a 3 micron capsule in that mic.

Harvey,

I thought the T3 Alan sent you was fitted with a Cinemag transformer. I was talking to Brent only recently about his "experiments" and he didn't mention the Lundahls .

ChrisO

I'm wrong, it is the Cinemag transformer.
