they work just fine as a CD Rom, but, you may not want to put that kind of usage on it. CD Rom's and burners only have so many hours of use on them, then they fail. Also, generally, CD burners don't usually play back as fast as regular CD Roms. So, for about $40 you can get the fastest CD Rom and use it to install your software, play CD's etc...and do it much faster then a CD-R, then just use your far more expensive CD-R for it's intended role of data back up and/or making music CD's. You will get many more miles out of it this way.
