A capo for my casio keyboard?

My keyboard skills are not that great so I can play better in some keys over others. Obviously c is easy (all the white notes). I tend to use my old duff casio keyboard to drive vst instruments.

I know how to transpose a piece of midi music in cubase after it has been created. But suppose I have a song recorded in the key of C#. At the moment I need to struggle with the C# scale if I want to compose over the audio. I could resample the audio down to C but I don't really want to go down that route.

Can't I do something to the chain to transpose all my midi notes as I play so I can use the white notes to play along with a piece of music in C# (or any other key for that matter). It would be like a capo for my keyboard.

Any ideas?

gee that negative rep stings

This is a good question that I don't have an answer to. But, I increased your rep by a LOT! ;)

Almost any electronic keyboard should have a transpose function - which would allow you to do exactly what you want (play in C but have it sound as C#).

Most keyboards achieve this in one of two ways - there is either a tranpose button that you hold down and then press a key to identify what key you want to play in - or - a window/screen that allows you to set a tuning parameter (in your case +1).

Unfortunately, you have to figure out where that control parameter is on your keyboard (it would likely be within system control parameters). Yourr manual should tell you, or you may be able to down load a manual from Casio - or there are web sites where you can purchase manuals for outdated keyboards.

An option would be to record the MIDI keyboard performance in C and then transpose it to C# in Cubase. Simply mute all the tracks - except the drums and then record in C - if all the melodic parts are muted, you sshould be able to play in C with no major problems (assuming you know the song's chord progression).

Good luck!

Most keyboards have a transpose button. If your's doesnt, buy one that does.

Don't know why you're getting slammed so hard for such a simple question. Yes, your Casio has a transpose feature (regardless of the model#) if it has midi capabilites. It can also be adjusted in +/- cents to accomodate less than perfect pitches. This is effectively a keyboard-capo, and most guys do this to avoid those nasty enharmonic keys.

Yeah I had found a tuner function on the keyboard to +/- the pitch but not transpose it full semi-tones. Didn't know if such a thing existed and wondered if I could do it in cubase. Now that I know it should be there I'll look again.

Thanks
