hello friends. i have a question regarding cakewalk 9 and the roland xp 60. heres the info. my brother has an xp60 but he is having problems loading and saving songs on the keyboard. he has a pc with cakewalk 9. i suggested to him that he record into cakewalk and save the sequences there. or that he record the MIDI and basically just use the xp as a sound module. my friend uses cakewalk 9 and a proteus so you can see its basically the same thing. so heres my question. what settings need to be made on cakewalk to accomplish this? the xp60 is set to PR-A:12 POPSET as i was told by roland tech support. i just need proper cw9 settings. your help will be greatly appreciated.

thanx guys

ps im not a newbie i am "king of the jews" and i have been a member of this sight for almost a year. however i 4got my passcode and all.....

Well, that does not sound too difficult.

I did this with both a Roland D-20 and an Alesis QS6.1

I hooked the midi up appropriately, and recorded the midi data. The only issue is going to be which midi port the xp60 will want to use during playback to play it's internal sounds and not use general midi. On the Alesis I had to use port 8 but tell cakewalk to play on 1. So take that as you will, but it can be done.

Play with it once the xp60 is at least playing something untill you hit the right button. Then write it down!

Good luck.

I am using the xp-60 with cw9, there are midi i/o options (in cw midi track view) that can be used to patch in the different pre-sets in the roland. The xp patches are already in cw you just got to find the right settings. When I get back to the lab, I will have a closer look see at how the heck I got it configured.

In the track view of any midi channel - double click on the patch pane, a dialog box will appear - this is the track properties dialog box. Click instuments . . . this is the assign instruments dialog box. Click define . .
and another dialog box appears, now click import and select the Roland icon and open. Now the instrument definition box for Roland opens, scroll down to the bottom and you will see the drum, patch and performance settings for the xp-60. Once you import these patches it will be a matter of using the track properties dialog box to assign the desired port, bank and patch of the xp to cakewalk. You will have to repeat these steps for each midi channel that you want the xp to control, make sure you get one channel right before you proceed.

EMERGENCY!!!!! HELP!!! REWARD 4 HELPING:REASON

i am in idaho trying to get this thing to work. i will be here until monday night. thats when i fly back 2 cali. let me update you all on whats going on.

my brother has a pc and an xp60. the 60's disk drive is NOT operating correctly. i suggested that use cakewalk and record the MIDI info but use the xp as a sound module. basically i was thinking that he could play the notes on cakewalk or from th xp and then match up and change the sounds. i have NOT been succesful at this. i have been succesful at recording the xp as AUDIO.

im just tryin to save my brother some hard disc space. if he has to record the audio no problem. however this is were the REAL problem begins. we started of recording a hi hat. everything was great. then we tried to record a snare. BIG PROBLEM. on the new track it recorded the snare AND the original hi hat on the same tracks. so it was 1 track of hi hats and another track that had hi hats and the snare. what settings do i need to make to correct this error? my brother is using a AUDIOPHILE 2496 and windows M.E. when i go to the sounds & multimedia section i double click and press "audio". i CANNOT adjust the RECORDING volume or advanced settings. i can ONLY adjust the playback.

i hope i have supplied sufficient info regarding the problem. if someone gets me on the right track i will send them a copy of PROPELLERHEADS REASON in the mail. its a 2 disc program and it goes to whomever can help me out b4 i fly back to cali monday night.

ps im NOT bullshittin

The problem isn't with the SC. it's with the way you have configured CW. Open the source window for the track and select the port and channel you want to record. Also select the output port.

i did all that BEFORE i made the RECENT post. didnt work. its still recording strange. track one has hi hats. track 2 has those same hi hats and the snare. track 3 will have those same hi hats, snare and the new instrument. it keeps going like this. now a NEW problem has reared its ugly head. im trying to SYNC CW and the xp60 because his xp60 drive is broken. i wanna make the music on the xp60,loop it for 8 or 16 measures and record the MIDI into cakewalk. cant do it. it keeps tellin me i have no input or output ports selected and that recording will not work. when i go and set them it keeps giving me the same message.

so basically can ANYONE tell me how to sync CW to the xp60 so CW can be the master ? i did it by the manual and it didnt work. if recording the audio is too much, telling me how to record the midi info will suffice. i need step by step instructions. the reward STILL stands. a copy of REASON to the person who helps me out. im in idaho trying to help my brother and i will be flying back to cali monday. thats why im kinda desperate.

thanx guys 4 helpin me out

ps idaho is kinda nice. calm serene place, nice weather.

with my setup i use a midiman 2x2. he has a audiophile 2496 soundcard. it has analog and out. spidif in and out. and midi in and out.

you said

Also, do you have the INS DEF for the xp60 loaded into CW? it almost sounds like (and I'm far from expert on this, but here goes) some SYSEX commands are fucked up and CW just doesn't recognize that keyboard at all. Another thing could be the instrument ID is wrong in CW. Have you tried a bulk dump from the Roland into CW?

what is "INS DEF"? where do i check the instrument ids on cw? shouldnt it be 17? how do i bulk dump?

To set CW to master select OPTIONS>PROJECT
open CLOCK tab. Select "INTERNAL" Hitting the play button in CW should start your sequence playing.

i did that yesterday and it said it was waiting for a midi message. last night REASON was choking the midi i/o. i had to uncheck something in reason to get it back to normal. i have the xp set to pr-a POPSET 12. with local OFF and rx and tx on for all the channels. it is set to SLAVE.

so what about the CW midi INPUT settings? every channel is checked and echo is set to none. with CW midi OUTPUT i have transmit midi start/continue/stop/clock checked. is this correct?

how do i turn off the clone feature in cakewalk? every audio track i record in cw has the new audio along with the old audio on the same track.

thanx 4 the help

the data dump didnt work. when i clicked <YOU START DUMP ON INSTRUMENT> nothing happened. i did the instrument definitions 2 days ago. i set cw to midi sync saw the message. pressed play on the xp and the message remained.....im gonna try all this with my xp60 when i get back. this is crazy. cant record midi and do a sync. nor can i record audio correctly. all the tracks keep recording themselvs. its like i cant turn the clone feature off...

thanx 4 the help

Czar,

First thing , forget about the instrument definition stuff.
You dont need to do that unless you want to be able to see
inside of Cakewalk what sound module and what program you
are using. Well its better to do those changes at the keyboard
itself as far as my situation is concerned if you know your board.

So here,s what you do..Im not in front of cakewalk so this
is my best shot..if I leave something out I will repost it here when
I get to my puter. I pretty much do the same thing but use the Triton instead.

1.Go to the first track you want to record on in the Track View
right click on source and select track properties..go down to track properties and click select Midi Omni for source..then port 1
then select the channel 1..then click o k

If you want record each instrument in the roland on a separate
track you are gonna have to assign each instrument in the Roland to its own Midi Channel.....EX: Hi hat ch1..kick ch 2 etc.

If you cant do that in the Roland then youre gonna have to dump
everything to one track in Cakewalk and split everything from
there utilizing the split note to track CAL program .And then audition each track and find everything. Can be rough depending
on what kind of instruments you are doing.

O K lets say that you have assigned the Hi hat in the Roland to Midi ch 1...

In cakewalk , go to Project Options..Clock Tab..select Midi Sync do
this only if you are rerecording previously sequenced material..otherwise...leave it at Audio click O K
go to the Midi Input tab..make sure there is a check mark in
all of the midi channels..select Auto for echo mode..click o k

Go to Options- Midi Devices-make sure that your midi interface is highlighted in both the Input ports and Output ports. if not highlight them and click on the Move selected devices to Top button..click o k

go to Options again..click instruments..make sure youre Midi
interace is shown in the left column 16 times as being assigned to
all the 16 channels on port 1..click o k

Back to the Roland, make sure its in local..check this by tapping the keys ..you should have no sound.

Go back to Cakewalk ..and arm track 1..this is the one we set
up already..

Go and tap on the keys of the roland you should here sound
and only the sound you have assigned to Midi channel one in the
roland...with cakewalk being armed on track one ..you are hearing
an echo from cakewalk...make sure the echo function is turned off
in the Roland if you have one.

Click record in cakewalk ..it should say waiting for midi sync..
click play on the roland and that should do it..if you want to record
more than a channel at a time ..go back to step 1 and repeat this for each track except...change the outport channel to correspond
to the channel you are send ing and receiving on..and instead of using Midi Omni.. use the corresponding channel number for input
also...

Thats from the hip...i will verify this when I get to my puter in a few hours..and none of that was in a specific order...except for the record part...this method assumes that you know how to
configure your board though..I have found it easier than trying
to do everything within cakewalk..especially when you want to
auditon sounds on the fly...

I'll check back later...
