I walk the line
I know, I should be able to figure this out from other posts, but Professor, I think my brain is full.

I've got the 67, so i know what it sounds like. I know that you've said you also like the 990 for some vocals.

Can you tell me, in a nutshell, what the general sonic differences are between the two? Is one brighter, one flatter, one have more or less of a proximity factor, is one noisier, etc.? Would it be desireable to have both, or are they so similar that it would be somewhat redundant? I only ask because I can get a really good deal on a new one, but if it's pretty much the same thing, then I'll pass and save the money for something more useful to me.

And I promise to save this thread so I won't have to ask it again. :o

bump ching bump ching bump ching bump ching

Hey, I'm doin' good to handle 4/4.

No replies? Not even to tell me where I could've found the answer already? :(

The 990 is a small-diaphragm condenser, and it sounds and acts like one.

The v67 is a large-diaphragm condenser, and it sounds and acts like one.

The 990 is brighter, has a wider pattern, exhibits less proximity effect, is quicker with transients, and isn't scooped out in the mids. Others seem to think it sounds like shit. I happen to like it and find it very useful.

The v67 isn't as detailed, particularly in the midrange where it's kind of understated (scooped), and doesn't have great transient response. Good proximity effect, somewhat flattering on some things, less so on others. I think it sounds like shit on a stick. Others seem to like it quite a bit.

Thank you sir

That's just about what I was looking for.

Somehow I'd missed the fact that the 990s were sd. I guess the fact that people are using them for vocals, and you don't hear too often of people using sd for vocals, combined with the fact that they just look so honkin' huge, I just assumed.

Now I just feel silly. :o

I really dislike my 67, so I guess it's good to know that they are very different. I guess I could sell them if I don't like them and not be out too much for the experience.

Thanks.

The 990's use the same capsule, actually, as the mxl603, and it sounds similar.

Speaking of that capsule, if you're looking at the 990, I think the best implimentation of that particular capsule is in the MCA SP-1. And you can find those, sometimes, even cheaper than the 990 on Ebay.

And speaking of capsules, I actually think the better implimentation of the v67 capsule can be found in the CAD M37. Not to be confused with the latter-version, M-177. The m37 can also be found on ebay, from time to time, for very cheap. And it just sounds like a much cleaner, more detailed version of the Marshall v67. If you ever want to hear what that capsule is capable of, then listen to the m37.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

So really, instead of the 990s being an equivalent to the 67, they're more an equivalent to the 603s, so if I got the 990s, I wouldn't need the 603s. Interesting. And I know you said the MCA would be better, but this will be almost free for me, so that's really the major reason I wanted to know. But even almost free isn't the same as free, so if they were going to sound anything like the 67 I was gonna pass. I still might, haven't made up my mind yet.

Thanks again. Even though you occasionally have to wail on those of us who keep asking the same stupid questions repeatedly, you are also one of the ones who actually gives clear, concise, helpful advice. Thanks.

(I'm printing and saving this thread so I shouldn't have to ask it again.)

I miss my brain.

Not exactly the same or anything, but probably similar enough. They would cover a lot of the same bases.

When i first started my gear rage, i wanted to get the mxl 990 but it got such a bad rep, i didn't want it. You have alot of knowledge on recording and you like it so maybe i was wrong. Does it sound pretty good? Really can't lose too bad for $50 bucks. I have a spc1 and a nady condenser. I'm workin on savin up for a ADK A-51 but i might buy a 990 too since you think it sounds pretty good. Got any links to this mic in use?
