windows 98se sometimes won't shut down....
why the hell not?

The update?

I recall there being an update you had to install for it to shut down reliably.

Go to the MS Knowledge Base and look around. You can usually find an answer to your MS questions there, and more times then not, a fix....:) Most people never bother with the wealth of infomation that is there and just bitch about Windows not working right....sigh...If most only understood just how powerful most MS products are, and how it can never come out of the box and work correctly on EVERYONE'S machine....but that is a whole other rant...

I've seen this problem on so many machines, and I've yet to see a reliable fix. One thing you can try is go to start>run>msconfig and go to advanced>'disable fast shutdown'. Try checking it or unchecking it. This problem seems more hardware dependent from what i've found.

If your using AOL5.0 download AOL 6.0 that solved the problem for me. The information is located at the Microsoft help site.

norton was scaning floppy drive on shut down so I got rid of that option and things seem ok so far.
