There's a guy on the net selling his Germanium and I've been emailing him back and forth all day. Is $875 a good deal?

I hope it's good cause I just bought it. :D

There's no where around that I can sample the pre but it gets killer reviews and the guy was really nice.

I have 2 Chandler LTD-2s with mastering mods.

I love 'em. Good shit indeed.

The Germanium is advertised as the ultimate guitar pre. But I wonder about vocals? Aside from the pres on my Fireface, it would be the only pre I have...and I like some color on my vocals.

I guess I'll just have to give it a whirl and report back.

Next on the list...API A2D. :D I wonder how the wife will take that? hehe

If it's like other Chandler gear it's probably a bit colored, similar to the sound of a Neve pre.

Neve pres for guitars are classic, in particular the Neve 1073. It may be too colored for vocals though depending on what sound you're going for.

If you're recording to digital I would look at a good tube pre for vocals. I was using a Groove Tubes Viper at a studio recently, sounded very cool. The pres from DW Fearn are also good from what I've heard but never used them yet.

masteringhouse,

I have an LTD-2 that I absolutely love on bass and drums. I have been thinking about getting a second one to run mixes through. to sort of replace the limiter. do you think this is a good idea? do you use your pair often? sorry, I dont have any experience with the germ but I can tell you that germanium fuzz pedals are the best. and supposedly a lot gear used germanium transistors a long time ago (i think i heard the early neve prototypes did)

I dont know if I would say that. The last time I heard a 1073 on vocals (just last week) it was perfect. But this was a AMS Neve 1073 , not an original. I dont know if any circuity has been changed ,besides no eq.

I think it's a great idea. I often do this on the summing bus of Pro Tools to get a slightly more organic sound than in the box. I just wouldn't hit it too hard. Also I recommend that you link the two of them in order to keep the balance of the stereo track consistent.

Re. The 1073, it can be very good for vocals. I just find that a tube pre gives the vocals more depth. YMMV etc.
