Hi All. I've got a MOTU 2408mk3. I have been using the mackie VLZ preamps. My plan is to purchase a really nice stereo preamp (something like a pair of old studer 169 channel strips, or a millenia media hv3-c) as my primary preamps, and also an 8-channel lightpipe preamp for additional inputs, and a little different sound. I might also get a tube something or another later on.

Is there anyone out there who has heard both the Mackie Onyx 800r and the Focusrite OctoPre and can give me some feedback about how they sound? I see that m-audio also makes a similar product, is that any good?

Thanks!

thanks, guys. any words on the differences in sound between the two units?

I like that the focusrite has built-in compressor/limiters, limited that they may be, on each channel. On the mackie, there is no way to add an outboard compressor between the preamp and the a/d. Do you all track with compression or do you use a plug-in later on? Or both? It'd be nice to have those compressors there while tracking drums, for example.
