hmmm, ok. We're gonna sell our 4 track Fostex FD4, in order to get a better, bigger machine (8 tracks)
The Boss BR8 looks promising, but it appears to be geared more towards the lone guitarist as a kinda scratchpad thingy. Is there anyone out there who can recommend any alternatives, OR anyone who can tell me if the BR8 is any good for proper, decent sounding full demos? Cheers one and all,
FiL.

Does it HAVE to be digital? If not, look into the Tascam 688. Amazing unit, I have one, sounds excellent. Very fully featured and you can get one used (no longer made new) on ebay for less than $700 usually. If it has to be digital, take a look at the new Tascam 788.

If you want a serious digital 8-track, I'd go for an Alesis Adat. For $1600 you can get 8 tracks at 20 bit. The best part is that it uses S-VHS video tapes, so and hour more space is like 5 bucks... waaaaaaay less than hard disk recording.

Alesis LX 20 BRAND SPANKIN' NEW for $999! Can't beat that!

You didn't specify a budget, which is why you get all these disparate results. Are you prepared to shell out $2000 on 8-track recording? Then I'd assume an ADAT would be an excellent alternative (because it's not just the ADAT, you need a mixer too).

Since you mention the BR-8, I somehow suspect that the other guys here have gotten a slightly wierd view of your budget... In which case you want to forget the ADAT. Thats really rather pro equipment, and is probably way over your level and budget, right?

So what you need to do is thing about specifications. What do you need, how much do you have?

How many tracks do you need to record at once? How many mics are you using at one time, max?

Ok, budget here is whatever 5 lowly students can stump up, say about £700 (prob a bit less than $1000). Basically, we need a machine, preferably digital, with 8 tracks that we can record RELIABLY to (ie NO bl**dy Fostex). Recording drums, so however many tracks it really takes to do that (2? 4?), and using max 4 mics or whatever..
Is there anything really wrong with the boss? so long as it basically does some or preferably all of the above, we'll probably be ok with it. Just after some advice from the collective knowledge of the homerecording members!

Well, you COULD use more than 2 or 4 for drums...I wish I had 7 or 8 tracks in addition to my current 8 tracks specifically for drums...oh well.
