8 Pres needed

I know threads like this have been created before but none seemed to answer all the questions I have so I decided to just register and ask what I wanna know. Here's the deal, I have a M-Audio Delta 1010 and I need 8 Pre-amps. My Price range is really a lot more than i can really afford but I think I am going to end up spending about $600 USD or so anyways. These are what I am thinking of:
- M-Audio Octane $599.00
- Mackie Onyx 800R $? (not yet realeased)
- Studio Projects SP828 $599.00 (not yet released)
- A mixer that will accommodate my needs.
What ever I do get it needs to be rackmountable and if it is a mixer it must be less than 10 spaces (I built the rack into the wall and they are two 10 space racks)
I will eventually get a better Pre-amp (like the RNP) or a few and perhaps another Delta 1010 to go along with them but for now I need 8 that sound as good as possible for the money.

Check out the yamaha MLA7, its come down from $1200. to that price point...and its rather good.

Soundcraft M-12 will give you 12 channels with direct outs on all of them, with very usable preamps and really nice "British" EQs, from what I'm told. Should cost you around 600 bucks, depending on where you get it.

I have a friend with the M12 and it is a decent setup and a mixer allways comes in handy if you do PA too.

The M12 would seem to be almost perfect if it wasn't for the fact that they are 11 rack spaces. I should have decided what I was putting in the racks before i decided on their size and built them.
As for the MLA7 there is one on E-bay but it looks pretty old. It really doesn't look anything like the MLA8 on the yamaha website, and they don't have any photos of the MLA7.

I won an auction for a MLA7 just a few minutes ago, can't wait to get the unit and try it out.

what do you guys have against Behringer... just because it is not an american gear... and because you know it is cheap you are mean ot it... There are folks that cannot afford anything else and like to record, do sound stuff as well... Behringer fits everyone's buck and it is not as bad as you guys say... well... is just my opinion... I'm not a pro...

Behringer has crappy stuff but don't be blinded by snobism: their new 8 preamps BEHRINGER ADA8000 even gets great reviews from Sound On Sound... pretty good preamps for an affordableprice.

Wow, really? I bought one on ebay for $189 and I think it's worth every penny. Nice, solid pres with little color.

Here's a dumb question

I was looking at the MLA8 and it says the output is a Dsub 25 pin. How would one connect this to the delta 1010 (which has 1/4 TRS Imputs) so that the preamp 1 would go to the input 1 on the delta card ect?

I don't know if your feelin the pre's in the Aardvark stuff, but the Q10 is only $699 with 8 pre's

You make it sound like Sound on Sound ever gives really bad reviews. I've seriously never read a bad review in that mag.

Well, the ADA8000 got a good review in tapeop, too. I agree with the SOS sentiment, but TapeOp ain't a bad place to earn some respect. But...I use my ADA8000 mostly as line ins. I'd say go for the Octane, although the gain looks a little low on those. I imagine the SP828 will sound good, but I've never tried it...
