8 pre strip

Ok...

I use an M-audio Delta 1010 to get into my computer. Currently I use an 8 input SMPro audio preamp (that's eight mic ins, 8 balanced outs) to go into the 1010. The pre's are good enough sounding to my ears, but I know it's a $150 8 strip pre...that's not gonna cut it forever.

Someone told me that the Onyx pre's are amazing. I saw that they have a 4 mix pre strip that would go into my 1010, but it doesn't seem the 8 pre version would. Am I wrong? would the the 8 pre version work? Also, is it worth it? Could I get a comparable 8 pre strip for less that would work fine somewhere else?

Thanks for any help.

Jacob

Ps...I know that you could give me different options that might work better...I like having an 8 input strip and I wanna keep it that way...I would love to hear about good or bad expriences with any 8 input pres out there.

2 -4channel sebatrons would be amazing have you seen those units :)

Now, I don't understand where you're getting this "not working with your 1010" stuff. Anything will work with it. :D Anything that has outputs, that is. Just go from the line outs of the pres to the line ins on your card. Bada-bing. That's what these things are designed for.

What you might consider right now would be to pick up a decent mixer to hold you over until you can get something nicer.

The Mackie Onyx pres you were talking about come in their newer mixers ... and the Soundcraft M-series boards have decent mic pres as well. Either one would likely be at least a small step up from what you have now. Then at some point in the future, you might want to move on to a couple of Syteks or something along those lines, but you'll always have use for the mixer.

Mixers have quite a long signal chain. A decent 8ch mic pre could be the Studio Projects SP828 (afaik it uses TI INA chips so it's a transformerless design). $600 or less I think. If you want a good 8ch mic pre with transformer
inputs look at this mic pre:

JLM Audio TMP-8

The price is about $2000 USD ($250 per channel) / €1700.

if yer bent on the 8 channel thing - something along the lines of an Aardvark Q10 with the 8 mic pres built in may do it for ya. Presonus makes one now that Aardvark is gone :( . I dug the Q10 pres....never heard these.

An Onyx 800R will work fine with a Delta 1010. Patch a DB25 to TRS snake from the back of the 800R to the inputs of the Delta. This works great with the Onyx boards that don't have the firewire option.

The 800R would work great. If you don't need its D/A conversion and the M-S decoding and the variable impedance on the first channel, the 1620 Onyx mixer is about $200 cheaper and gives you the same preamps, as well as 8 more channels - makes a killer headphone/monitor mixer.

Thanks for the help

I appreciate the help and info...

As for how much I'd like to spend...I wanna get quality really. 700 a channel is way too much... I'd like to keep it below a thousand, but there's some leeway available.

The only reason I thought of the Onyx is because I've heard those are amazing pres and have great value for what they cost.

Any more suggestions? I'd really like someone who has worked with an onyx and a octane to let me know how they compare

Octave vs Onyx vs SP828

Does anyone have any info on these pres? Does anyone use them? Should I start a new thread?

The sytek pre's are quite good for the money. 4 channels with phase/phantom, and mute.

I use one with the burr browns on all four channels that I have had since 1999. They are still rocking, though the pots got a little scratchy....

Totally good utility pre. work for anything, just like any good pre will.
