I've been browsing around for a mixer. I really want to get a 8 (to 12) channel mixer with really good built in preamps and some aux send/returns. Because I want to use it to record through (streight into my interface) it has to have 8 corresponding outputs (preferrably 1/4" jacks).

Unfortunatly this 8-12 ch. market is dominated by mixers that only have a main stereo output (no outputs on each channel). That isn't good enough for a nerd like me.

Thank you for your answers

Soundcraft M4 M8 or M12

Allen & Heath MixWizard

more with direct outs not sure if there 1/4" though...

Alesis Studio 24
Makie Onyx
and i think some of the behringer stuff has it too (not that i'd reccomend it)

Channel inserts/AUX sends provide the same functionality as outputs on each channel. Almost very mixer I know of has that capability...

wow - soundcraft

wow, the soundcraft mixer seems to have been designed for my personal needs. :)

I saw a discussion here which mentioned the soundcraft mixer and I looked at it, but I didn't notice the outputs.

The behringer mixers don't have dedicated outputs on all tracks

hmmm...

I didn't know that. If they are outputs, why are they called inserts?

An insert provides a route out of, then back into a channel. It requires an insert cable like this one. It's used to route 100% of a signal directly into outboard gear, then back into the same channel.

god this confused me so much when i was starting out and had to judge it by pictures on the internet. inserts work as a "send & recieve" kind of thing. its a TRS(stereo) connector. the first click sends signal out, the 2nd click is recieve.

eek

Hot dang... I didn't know that... And you guys say I can use an insert as an output? Why then do some mixers have a separate output for each channel?

So you can still use the AUX send/returns to route your signal to external FX boxes...

Insert comes before the fader, sends, mute/solo, and sometimes the EQ section. Channel output comes after the signal has been through all that.

Then channel output is really what I want because I want to be able to use inserts to effects - pre output - so the effect will be recorded... isn't it... ?? :p

Or you can record the raw signal and add the effect later on, which is probably the safer way to do it since you still have the raw track if you don't like the effect later. Or you can take the insert to an effect and run the output of the effect box into your recorder, instead of back into the mixer.

the thing

Does the soundcraft M8 mixer have outputs on all channels or only inserts? I can't see it from the images.

I don't want the output to interfere with monitoring and mixing in the mixer. Think of it like a concert. I want to record the concert as it is, no matter what effects are there. I just want the outputs to be invisible except that I can pick them up in the computer.
