hey dudes,

These songs were put up in the mixing clinic so there is no need to respond to this thread unless you want to ask about something. I just put it up here in the 'Tascam' forum so that 788 users, or potential users could check it out if they wanted..I have heard the quality was decent..

the tune is called 'unwell' and most of the songs up there were recorded on the 788...

Well done. Nice mix, nice big sound.

How about a rundown on what you used to record and effects and setting on the 788?

yeah, that's the ticket. Do what he said. I love to have one of them machines. Or maybe it's the talent. Oh well, I guess I can BUY the machine.

thanks guys...

Hey dtb, you should check out philboyd's songs, I think you would like them, and I also think he would like your songs......I'm not just saying this, although I know it sounds that way....they share similarity's........and I like them both.

hey philboyd, I haven't seen many of the other 788 people around lately......so it's nice to be speaking in the 788 forum. I'm still using V1.05:eek: :D

I gave a complete rundown in the mixing clinic but I'll write it hear with some extra 788 info that others might not care about...

I have been experimenting with the 788's compresor a lot lately..just to tighten things up a bit...I also have a Presonus Blue Max compressor that has some great presets.....It is one of the greatest recording weapons I ever purchased for $150

Here's a rundown of my guitar gear,

Pod Pro
Johnson J Station
SansampGT2
Korg G1 distortion processor
Digitech 2112
a few Boss pedals like A PS-5 pitchshifter pedal and the new boss dynamic Wah.... a few others that I only use when jamming, not recording.....

The guitars are all cheap (all under 300 except for my Bass) and I put 'hot rail pickups ' in all of them.....each costing about half the price of the whole guitar after installation.....I finally learned how to intonate them as well....it was either that, or send them into the shop every 2 months...at $50 a setup....

I use different tunings like...drop C#, drop B flat, E flat etc. The guitar for this was tuned to drop B-flat...and was a 'mexi' strat with a hotrail.

The recording chain for the rhythm was,
guitar, Sansamp,Pod,Blue Max, into the 788......It was played twice and on one of the guitar tracks, I added a BBE sonic Maximizer into the chain....but I only use that sparingly for guitar (heavily for bass) and NEVER for a whole mix..... I then added some gentle 788 compression (I think the ratio was 1.7 or somewhere abouts) and didnt change any other compression setting except ratio and level....I also usually turn off the 788's e.q.'s except when I have to....it is very easy to ruin the sound with e.q. if you are stumbling through things like I am...I always try to make changes at the source..

The lead git chain was a bit different....It was the guitar with the PS-5, right into the Pod Pro, into the Blue Max and then I added a bit of the 'stereo exciter' on the 788. I turned of its compressions gate everything except the exciter itself and used it with caution....Before I bounced tracks, I would use a bit more 788 compression, but not too much......It has been mostly trial and error...

The reason I posted this song here as well as 'the mixing clinic' is because people who did not know it was recorded with a 788 thought it had decent quality....and I really have come to love it despite it's very minor flaws....I think it is a GREAT recorder and has 'rarely' ever let me down......and figured I'd tell anyone who would be interested in this type of thing.

Anything your curious about, please ask..... I know very little, but will share anything someone might find useful....
