788 Roadmap?

I don't use those adapters. I've got an outboard pre and use it with the input on the 788 turned all the way down. Makes a huge difference in the quality of recordings you get.

I got the same New Old Stock $250 deal on eBay. I bought it for the convenience of an all-in-one machine, but I'm really enjoying the quality of sound especially for $250.

Cool deck in your photos! Now that's a reel all-in-one machine!

Sloom & I were talking offboard about using the M30 mixer as a front end to the 788.

The M30 has 8 decent preamps, EQ, 8x4 Assign matrix, Monitor & Submix, which all-in-all is a pretty fancy front end to the 788, and certainly solves many of the gripes I have about the shortcomings of the 788, itself, which mainly has to do with the mixer section. Unfortunately, it's then no longer a 1-piece solution, but oh well.;)

Hey, great pix! Now that's a portastudio!

I forgot to get e-mailed when a response comes to the thread, I guess. Anyway, cool idea for using an outboard pre... as Dave said, we spoke about using the M-30 to front the 788. I'm gonna try that next time we do a session here at the house. Then I have to get buss #3 fixed... suddenly not happenning...

I've found that most people are having to do something to keep the 788 quiet for recording. A piece of foam underneath, a towel on top, whatever. Seems kinda 'trailer-park', but there's always something! Yep, maybe there's a quieter HD.
And I don't think I'll be able to fill up that 20GB HD either- especially with the CDR thingy to dump files/tracks to (thanks again for the linkage, Dave, now that you also need one!).

I've been using a Studio Projects B-3 (omni) for a 'room sound', and an AT4033a for close-miking with acoustic guitar, and vox, into the 788. Been getting pretty stellar sound, as far as my Skilsaw-damaged ears can make out! And the compression, 'verb, and EQ aren't bad, once you get used to doing the moves in the menu. I anticipate a good thing coming from the 788 with the M-30 in front. Will post result of some kind...

I looked at the 788 Roadmap again, and...

I think it's a more extensive mixer that's represented,... more along the lines of the M520,... which is comical too. ;)

O.k., I bite... why is that comical (not knowing the M520 might be key)?

Maybe I'm the only one, but...

I think it's funny that the 788's digital menu system is depicted by diagrams of "legacy" analog equipment. That's all.;)

Well, we can (most all of us) still most easily relate to that- the whole electric music revolution was witnessed by some people who are still alive... and the stompbox is only really 30-40 years old, right? So it's not like you have to guess at what you're looking at.

The whole trip with menus is that all the fx, etc one uses in the digital realm is now simply CODE! There really is no more mechanical parameter dictating a 'shape' for the fx unit. You don't need a battery compartment or a cicuit board. You can model anything in a software plug-in, and all it has to look like is a 'window' that lets you manipulate a set of 'knobs'.

So the end of my diatribe is, what are you gonna make it look like? Yet, your forehead-slapping remark is not lost on me, because digital is a consumer revolution we guess... and it's touted as being somehow "Better". But we have to use the old-school legend to identify it's attributes. And we get sick for the old, obsolete, kick-ass way of doing it as we identify parameters and jog through our menus...

Well,...

Having not seen the "788 Roadmap" previously, I'm used to seeing the 788 functions and details in a more or less "true" depiction,... of menu windows, text, and virtual "knobs" on the LCD display. Not having read the 788 manual cover-to-cover, I have browsed through the manual and "quick start guide" more than once.

Sure,... of course most people can relate to "knobs, faders, buttons and channel strips" of classic analog equipment. I'm not saying Tascam was "wrong" for depicting 788 functions that way, but it certainly struck me as "funny". ;)

I see your point- NOW they show you analogue pedals!

Well, I'm using digital gear, and it's a surprise to many. But darn it, it's handy! And now that I've spent all my dang money on it, I want analogue.

"Wah".

I got emailed about a response to this thread, but don't see it... ?

Who is jhfllaw? He is not on the member list.

Yeah, maybe he deleted himself, or maybe he was deleted. ;)

Hm. I've gotten a couple responses that were a bit wierd lately. Addressed to my user-name in particular, it seemed.

"This is a dangerous place...!"

Hey, a little time-passing story: I recorded a poetry reading tonight, at my neighbor's house. ...Used the Tascam 788: I ran a Studio Projects B-3 mic (with a windscreen from a shorty mic stand) on a set of stairs into a Studiomaster 12/2 mixer (w/ phantom-power), and from there into the 788.

I added a bit of compression to the incoming track, since the room was a bit open and reflectively-surfaced, and to keep the spikes below "zero dB"- there was significant audience presence in the fairly 'bright' room. Came out quite nicely!

The EQ in the Studiomaster (Logic Twelve) is nice and 'plumpy' sounding, and it's small- so it's fun to bring along for the phantom-power and the basic fuctionality.

'Far as the rest of my digital scene goes, I just bought a stupid MOTU interface (used) that doesn't work at all with my PC system. So here I am, stuck again with crap that I didn't do enough master's thesis on before I bought it.

But I remain undeterred. Read: Stubborn...

That's cool, man.

I'd be interested in doing a live-to-6-track recording of a garage band, or somethin'. I don't really have any material worked up that I could record, but I hope to get the 788 & other equipment out for a little messin' around. ;)

Do it!

The 788's a friendly machine once you get past the basics. And the garage-thing's what I'll be doing with mine at home here, too- at least 'till I get the PC going on.

After the gig last night, I had the 788 in it's padded suitacase, the small mixer in it's bag, a little wooden storage cylinder of cables and one small stand, all waiting, nice and small and orderly, by the door to leave. That was neat. With a good front-end, I don't think I'll try and beat this for sound/simplicity/portability*. The mixer's cicuit in front of the 788 is definitely where it's at.

*You might be able to, but how much of all that do I want to push for... I'm recording stuff, and I'm happy about that.

I have a 788 and I use it for live 6-track recordings. Regarding the discussion of hard-drive sizes, there is a maximum size the software will support. I don't have my manual handy, but I think it's only around 30gig give or take some. I think you can install any size drive you like, but it will only make use of its maximum amount. My factory-installed drive failed so I replaced it with the Maxtor fluid-bearing drive. Very simple, works great.
