a quickie here.....can someone tell me how to record a single source to track 6.

Dan

Sure...if that single source is coming thru INPUT B, hold down the INPUT B button, then Press & Release the SELECT button for Channel strip 6. Press the REC READY button.

Make sure the light is ON next to the CUE button so you can hear what you're recording.

Have your red fader set at '0' (about 3/4 up) then use a combination of the Channel 6 fader and your trim control for INPUT B (start with this in the 'line' position and bring it up slow) to set your levels.

When you have your levels set, press & hold the RECORD button, then Press & release the PLAY button.

There is also a set up for playback...yell when your ready.

This is for single channel recording...if you use the AUX INPUTS, they will (by Default) go to a linked STEREO PAIR of channels, in this case channels 5 & 6. That's another thread, another day.

triggoff

hey man, thanks for the reply.............I may have sumpin wrong. I don't think the pair (5, and 6) will "unlink". I tried a single source from each of A thru D, into 5 and 6 both, and when I try 6 it still works thru 5. Does that make since? hmmmmmmmmmmmm......I've only recently gotten to where I needed these two for single sources. I mostly have been using 5/6 for bouncing.

I'll be doing some more checking in the morning. I'll let ya know.

thanks,

Dan

I just had a thought......is the 788 set up for input "odd and even".....

input A or C going to 5 or 7.....and input B and D going to 6 and 8.....or sumpin like that? (I know 7/8 are stereo).

You can unlink two channels by Pressing & Holding the SELECT button on one channel and Pressing & Releasing the SELECT button on the other linked channel. (after unlinking, hold down the INPUT button you're working with, the channels routed to that input will flash)

Remember, when two channels are linked, the fader on the ODD channel controls volume on both channels, the EVEN channel fader does nothing.

And, Yes, there was talk of INPUT A&C being best suited for odd channels and INPUT B&D Best for even channels. (I think that's mentioned in the manual)

BUT, with single channel recording, I don't think it makes any difference which input is routed to which channels. I'll do a test at home tonight, just to be sure.

Hope this helps

P.S. - I think when you start a new song, channels 5&6 are linked (by default) and panned hard left [Channel 5] and hard right [ch 6]. They can be unlinked, using the method above and the pans certainly can be centered.

thanks man.......I'll be doing some testing tonight. I'll be back.

dtb,

The only reference I could find about the INPUTS and the even/odd question for channels was when you're recording to channels 7/8. INPUTS A&C will only route to channel 7 and INPUTS B&D will only route to channel 8.

So, if you Press & Hold INPUT A and Press & Release the SELECT button for channel 7/8...INPUT A is routed to both Channels 7 and 8. THEN = Press & Hold INPUT B and press & Release the SELECT button for channels 7/8, INPUT A stays on channel 7 and INPUT B is routed to channel 8.

Otherwise, any INPUT can be recorded to any channel. You can also record any INPUT to as many channels as you want (INPUT A can be routed to channel 1,2,3 and 4 if you want.)
But, you can't put two INPUTS to a single channel. (You can't route INPUTS A & B to channel 1)

Using the SUBMIXER may let you record multiple inputs to one channel. (Again, I'll have to test this tonight-it's been over a year since I've used the 788 as the main recorder, so I'm a lot rusty on it, but it's fun relearning it.)

How'd it go last night?

triggout

sorry trigg, got drunk and rowdy instead. :D I'll be checking it out this morning. I didn't realize the stuff about 7/8, and the odd/even stuff. Interesting. I'm such a stupid fuck when It comes to these things. I'll be back.

Dan

cool........thanks a bunch for your help there triggs........all works great. I'm thinking I never "un-linked" 5/6 when I created a new project each time. I just went through the process and got it. :D

You've done this before!

Hey, Dan,

I just saw "No Special Report" over at the Listening room.

Nice song!

From the way your question was worded here, I thought you were just getting started with the 788. Looks like you've taken it quiet a ways. Really good sounds out of it.

Next time I'll know not to be so 'step by step' in my answers.

Thanks for reading thru all the beginning  garbage and getting to the throat of the problem. Glad you're rolling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shit man......how about that. I've had this box for almost 4 years, and just got around to finding out (with your great help) about 5/6 unlink. :D

My own music very seldom goes beyond 3-4 tracks, and if they did, I'd be bouncing to 7/8, and using 1-4 again. Hardly ever used 5/6. When I do a little recording live (the little bluegrass band) I use 4 mics hanging from the ceiling, hence no 5/6, or 7/8. One of my picking pals just got to take their 8 track recorder home (owned by his band), and he was talking about the same thing, unlinking on his. (I think an Akia). So that's why I was asking.

I may be asking more in the future, cause I have a lot of time during the winter months, and will be trying to use other features on the 788 that I haven't used. The manual blows. Of course it would help if I could read. :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks again, for the info, and the comment on the tune.

Dan
