My father is looking for a digital piano. He has moved from his house into a home and did not take his piano with him. He needs something that he can control the volume of or plug headphones into.

Key importance to him:

#1 Realistic Piano Key Action - He has never liked organs or any other types of keyboards because of the unrealistic action on them.

#2 Decent Acoustic Piano Sound - He really needs nothing more than a piano sound from it but he would like it to sound pretty natural.

#3 Finally, he is on fixed income so he is looking for something in the $500 range.

I have searched pretty well here but most of the talk is about midi controllers and module... So, as I know nothing about keyboards, I am asking here if anyone is aware of anything new or used that would fit this bill.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to post your suggestions.

Casio Privia. Feel is very good, sound is acceptable, big bang for the buck. $4-600, depending on model. At least some of them are hammer-action. The 300 got a nice write-up in Keyboard Mag last month.

There WAS a Radio Shack knockoff that was dirt cheap when it went on closeout, but those are long gone.

The Casio Privia series has surprisingly good weighted action feel and very acceptable piano sounds. The 110 may be a very good option for your dad - it should ound be priced just under $500.

Certainly the Yamaha P-70 (or even P-140) would be very good options as well - although they are a little more expensive. For the price, the Casio Privia 110 may be the best choice for your dad's application.

This summer I tried just about every electronic piano on the market (Yamaha, Korg, Roland, Kurzweil, Casio, M-Audio and a few I've fogotten) and I chose a Casio 310 (same basic keyboard as the 110 - but with a few more sounds and other features). I felt it was the best combination of feel, sound & value).

I would suggest he try at least both the Yamaha & Casio models. I see you are from Milwaukee. Both Interstate Music and Guater Center should have all the reference models to try.

casio previa has the best feeling KBD action in that price range.... nice piano samples and easy to use. Cheap tooooooo!

Thank You!

Again, thanks to all of the great people on this board (and this post specifically.) My Dad chose the Cascio 110 sight unseen from Musicians Friend after talking to them about their return policy. At $400 it came in right under his budget.

He got it yesterday and absolutely LOVES it. Loves the sounds and the feel.

He is all jacked up and building a wood case for it so it will look like a tiny spinet.

Thanks to all for the help.

Jim
