While I wait for Tivo to record a bit of the SC game...

I have to put together a wish list for my family's Christmas gift exchange. Rules are: no gift certificates and less than $75 (not including tax or shipping).

I'd like to chip in $15 and get a SM57 but that's not allowed either (thanks to my mother-in-law and her rules).

So are their any mics available new for $75, worth even looking at?

My current mic collection looks like this:

(2) SM58s
(2) SM57s
Rode NTK
Rode NT1
(2) Rode NT5s
(2) Joe Meek JM27s
Shure KSM27
AKG C2000
Shure Beta52
Nady CM90
MXL 990 (from last year's gift exchang :: What a Dissapointment!)
(3) Sampson S11s

Any ideas?

ha ha! my family does $100, give or take!!

i dont know dude. can you get used stuff? then you could get a 57 AND a pack of gum!

Looks like you already have a pretty decent selection going...

I don't imagine you'd find a mic for $75 that would add much to your collection (I could be wrong).

Maybe there is something else for your studio you could get? A good pair of headphones? Mic stands? New keyboard/mouse? Cables? That's what I would do anyway.

Also, the MSH mics are good for acoustic instruments, like guitar/drums. You could buy a few of those...they're about $20 a piece I think.

They sound real good.

But I would personally still go for something else other than a mic...

Yeah, maybe some mic stands or headphones or maybe a few set of bass strings... That's a good idea!

Can they use Ebay and get a used mic?

I second that.

Of course, not actually ever using one myself, i am no expert...however, they do sound really good & for the $$$ you can't go wrong.

I plan on purchasing quite a few once a get some other non-audio expenses out of the way.

Besides, MS is a good guy & his kids need to eat.

How about a Lava Lamp? :D

That's funny. My wife REALLY wants me to put a lava lamp in my studio... they don't cost $75 though, do they?

Samson CO1 condensor mic is $69.99 so with tax its even under $75! :D

And actualy not a bad mic for the money IMHO.

Blaze, thanks.

I actually had one for a bit but traded it for... something... I can't remember. I remember liking it, but I guess not enough to hold onto it

Would it give me anything I don't already have in my mic collection?

No gift certificates????

Yeah... my mother-in-law says gift certificates are just one step away from us just handing each other money... she's got a fair number of oppinions on just about every topic come to think of it.

Just ask for a number of items that total $75 from where you think you'd buy the SM57.
After Christmas, do an exchange and add whatever christmas bucks you get and voila! SM57!!

So for $75 I could get like 4. Sweet!!!
Hey, every studio needs at least one. :D

Aren't you the dood, who's wife brought home the mics from a garage sale? Now she wants a Lave Lamp? Hang on to that woman, her heart seems to be in beat with yours.

Yup, that's me. Yeah, I'd like to say it was my incredible foresight and understaning of women that led me to marry her, but that would obviously be a complete lie. Dumb luck perhaps sums it up. She even thinks the bass traps in my studio "make the room look really cool."

But as with most women, she came equipped with a mother who's most classic comment to me of all time was "I don't see why you'd want to turn a pefectly good bedroom into a music studio. Besides, that room would make a good nursery."

this is a warning. get your GAS out of the way (or largely under control) before this comes to pass......b/c eventually your wife will come around to her mom's line of thinking. "we're not getting any younger", ya know. ;)
