703 fiberglass or equivalent

So I need more fiberglasses. Owens Corning doesn’t want to have anything to do with me. Local insulation companies are trying to sell me fiberboard and ceiling tiles. Perhaps there is another company that sells the equivalent to 703 under another name. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

TJ,

Other materials similar to 703 are called rock wool and mineral wool. Besides Owens-Corning there's also Knauff, Johns Manville, and Delta Rockwool. If you strike out on those I'll sell you all the 703 you need. But shipping from Connecticut is not cheap for 2x4 foot boxes, so try to find it locally first.

Would an alternative to 703 be to get the the regular old rolls of pink insulation, mount ti a piece of luann and cover with fabric?

No. That would not be a viable alternative. The pink insulation simply doesn't have the density for sound attenuation.

Home depot does sell a rigid fiberglass ceiling tile that is 3/4" thick and has a decorative plastic face glued on one side. I have bought a couple boxes of that (comes in 2x4 ft pieces) pulled off the face and spray glued two together to get ~ 1.5" thickness. Works great though probably not as cheap as simple 703.

Cheers
Kevin.

Here's a link to Knauf USA and info on their rigid fiberglass acoustic insulation. Call them to find a wholesale house in your area.

This stuff is expensive, about $1.25/square foot for 2"/3lb weight.

I would avoid rockwool. It's very heavy and doesn't hold up as well as rigid fiberglass.

The material to do 4- 42"wide x 90" panels with 3-1/2 inches of insulation came to about $335US.

Thanks a lot C7,Knauf has it in my area. The only thing is that is comes with some sort of backing on it. I wonder if that will hinder its performance. Its a 3lb. density, inch thick, fiberglass. $55.00 for 72 sq. ft.

I think the facing will only be a problem if you want to stack the 1" batts to make a 2" or thicker installation. From the charts on the above link the FSK-faced stuff has almost 3 times the Sound Absorbtion Coefficient of the plain stuff.

The facing would make the back layer pretty much unable to do it's job, I would think.

If you can get 2" I think you'll find it to be a lot more useful.

I've had trouble with Owens Corning also. They have a bunch of other accoustic products on their web site but I've asked them twice to have a sales rep call me in my area and no luck so far. I called a local roofing supply place and they have this stuff made by Firestone. Hope it holds up better than their tires. (-:

They say it's rigid fiberglass but haven't checked it out yet. A 4X8 by 1" unfaced sheet runs about $13, 1 1/2" $16 and 2" $19. If anyone has any idea from the specs given how this would perform, I'd appreciate the info!

Zikes,

That stuff seems really expensive. Also, the link you had is for an MSDS sheet--no acoustical data or density information by which to compare it. It might work ok, but what you want is something with about 3.0 lbs/cu. ft. density and you should also check out the absorption characteristics prior to shelling out any dough.

Where are you located? John Sayer's site has a thread with rigid fiberglass suppliers located across the U.S. This might be helpful.

Alex,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I didn't get back sooner but it has been a busy weekend! I'm pretty new here to these forums so didn't notice where you are located. I'm near Northridge, CA (San Fernando Valley) so not all that far from you. I've updated my profile also so my location shows now. I'm pretty good at finding stuff on the web but these materials have so far been a bit tricky to track down. So many different products out there. I tried Home Depot but they definitely don't stock 703 and when I ask, they don't know what it is. I'm sure there is a source somewhere between our two locations but just haven't found it yet. Plenty of time though as I haven't yet started the modifications to my room which will require quite a bit of other materials and work first. Another thing I need to find is a source for solid exterior doors (preferably pre framed with good gasketing). So far, the solid doors I've located have not been framed and I'd rather not do the work if I can find ones that are properly sealed. Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Zikes,

You can try these two for OC 703:

Southwestern Insulation, Garden Grove, 714-530-2980

CWCI, City of Industry, 626-369-4424

For your door, I was able to get a prehung solid core door at Home Depot. Check around. You can do the sealing yourself with conventional weather stripping around the sides--and if you really need it-- a custom door seal for the bottom. If you need a lot of isolation, consider putting in two doors.

Alex,

That place in Industry will work as my "real" job is in Pasadena. Very nice of you to hook me up! I will look into the doors at Home Depot. I checked two stores but perhaps they were just out of stock. I may end up with two doors, two walls, etc. before all is said and done.
