A few weeks ago I spent about 3 weeks with Nevermind, a highly acclaimed Nirvana tribute band. Why they wanted to record with some 18 year old hack like me, It is beyond me.

They go around the U.S. and soon the world and pay tribute to Nirvana and they came to me saying that They need some Demos to help them get more gigs.

We tracked 14 songs and these 7 were the ones that made the cut. Just looking to get some opinions.

These are alittle more compressed than the Originals.

Things to look for:
-Muddy guitars
-Squeezed OH's
-Poorly EQ'd Vocals

Thanks, any criticism is appreciated

Fuck, the compression is insane. Just a little? Music is squashed and drums are crying for dynamics!!! It has some kind of delay-feeling and maybe it's because a shitty compressor setting.

Drums
Use compression only to tame the peak and have a more consistent performance (https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=277725)

Kick is having the worst treatment, it's sounding muffled and lifeless. I'm guessing you put a crazy expander on it too so you're not only killing the dynamics but the decay of your sound. This is more evident on "In Bloom".

Bass
I like the sound of it, especially when it sounds naturally distorted.

Guitar
Bad idea to panned it into center. It collapses against the vocals in "Drain you" I know Cobain was the rhythm/lead guitarist but should should pan the guitars hard left and right to give more space to the music. Go to the albums and compare.

Vocals
Singer has done a great performance. Nothing to say in this point.

agreed that the compression is not your friend. i know that the nirvana recording used multiple compressors in their chains for the recording, but it was still dynamic where it had to be. nothing has any punch here, it's just loud.

I am admittedly ashamed and embarrassed to be a victim of the loudness war. I'M YOUNG AND IMPRESSIONABLE:confused: haha.

I'll ease off on the compression a shit load and see how it sounds. I used a new compressor plugin for this and clearly don't know the ins and outs of its settings.

I have a Stereo guitar track in the middle and a guitar left and right, should I just take out the stereo guitar all together or pan it?

Thanks again for the criticism, Keep it coming

I'll not comment on the compression. But In Bloom sounds pretty authentic aside from that, especially the solo. I'd have liked to have heard Something In The Way done the way they did it live :D

This makes me want to post some of my old Nirvana covers in the hope that someone will sing on them. Except I never got round to mixing them.

I'm glad the Lesson 01 was useful to you. Now, remix your tracks without using so much compression and the repost your tracks.

Just in case, if you use a slow release in your compressor you're gonna have this delay effect. Why? Because after the threshold is surpassed the compressor kicks in and the starts to decay sloooooowly and then another wave is compressed while the compressor is still decaying. You get it? You created a chain reaction, which may be great for experimental music but not for Nirvana.

I decided to fuck software and apply the master compression with my VLA II and I must say I am ridiculously pleased with the result I'll post it ASAP.

Thanks again for all the help

Can you post the track without any compression? Just to compare.

Good Lord that's awful. Sorry dude, but you need to start all over. But before you do, learn how to use compression and forget about being loud.

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking this does sound like shit, I should probably try not sucking before I ask for advice. Sorry for wasting your time and thanks for the honesty.
