i have a good deal on a 1969 Neumann U87.
i know that the u87 is still beeing used for many of the
charts productions today and i also know that many people
prefer the old ones over the new U87AI, but can a vintage 1969
U87 give you a modern pop/rock sound ? or is it only usefull for
people, looking for the vintage sound ? Would a new U87AI give you
a more modern sound than the old ones ?

thanxs in advance

A 'modern' sound has as good as nothing to do with whatever mic you use. It's more a result of squashing sound and heavy compression.

The older mics sound great, in fact you can read many discussion on the many forums in which people think that the older mics like U87, U67, M49 and M50 sound a lot better than the newer mics like U87ai, M147/149 and M150.

Of course the old mic has to be in great shape.

Having that said, I wonder why they don't make mics like they did 50 years ago.

A manufacturer like AKG used to make great mics, but these days they seem to have forgotten how to make them.

I can think of very few mics that would produce pop vocals as well as an old 87.-Richie
