I've been searching for input on these two mics and their respective qualities on acoustic strings; guitar, octave mondolin, bowed strings...curious what experience people may have had with these mics. In a previous post, someone felt that SP's have a "scooped mid" that they did not care for.
Now, I know that there is a price difference, and that the C4's have pattern options so there's a little apples and oranges here, but I've read such glowing praise for the 603 that I thought it might withstand the comparison. Sure, the omni option would be nice...but cardioid-wise how do these stack up?

Thanks in advance...

ps- I have a pair (not "matched", but pretty damn close) of AT 3031's which I like, but I am interested in two more SD's for the different qualities on various instruments...

You'd probably be better off adding a single or pair of large condensers for variety.

I have an AT4040 which works very well for vocals (only tried on one singer, soft folk style...very silky...) and I like it on my cello- richer than the 3031's, or as an abient mic set behind the 3031's.

Any other suggestions for LD's with a fairly flat response? I'm probably going to buy an RNP for my first quality pre (I have an ART DPS, and an old MP...) and would want something that would pair well with it for my stated purposes...

Also interested in the Grace 101, the comparison of the two having been talked, very amusingly at times, to death....but the $$$ are a bit steep for a pair. Down the road....

somethings that come to mind are the studio projects b1. it's not as crisp as the audio-technicas but it is neutral and it sounds different. they do tend to do a respectable job on acoustic instruments.

you might get another at4040, which is a more high fidelity sound.

Yeah, I've considered another 4040- but people here seem very in to having a collection of different (varying quality) mics to choose from...Is the AT4040 so well considered that I should have a pair?

well, most of us here aren't recording the sort of instruments that you are. :)

i've heard beyer mics mentioned for your apps but i'm not familiar with them past what i've read.
