The Shure KSM27s look nice. Any opinions or suggestions? I've got $600 to spend. Thanks!

I have a friend who has those. On his recordings, they sound kind of thin and brittle.

Maybe it was the fact that he was recording in a "acoustically dead" room.

But just giving you my two cents.

Allways safe to go with SM81's MC-012's (from soundroom), or the Peluso SDCs . Most people will tend to go with a pair of SDC's as aposed to LDC's on overheads. And in your range there aren't too many nice pairs of LDC's to be found anyway.

Do you want to use the mics for other duties besides overheads and if so what? Lots of mics are suitable. I've used Beyer M160s, AT-4050s, Josephson C42s, AT-4051s and Beyer MCE93s. All sound good and all sound different. You shoudl be able to get the AT-4051s or the Beyer MCE93s for less than $600 used. You would have to get lucky to get a pair of the other for that amount, but you could probably find them used for @$700.

I need a pair for my drum overheads, but I also would like something I can use on saxophone, acoustic guitar, and vocals. I have no condensors at the time, and I'm using SM57s for everything.

Save up a little more money and get a pair of Shure KSM32's. They are my favorite oveheads and any price point (and I have used tons of mics that cost much more). The KSM 32 is also a cool mic for many things including brass and guitars etc.

Look at somde LDC's. I've got a buddy who uses 4033's as overheads and it sounds great...really big image.

Another option is picking up a multipattern and cardoid LDC and recording in M-S

In the long run, would I be better off dishing out an extra $400 for a pair KSM32s insteading purchasing a pair KSM27s?

Sorry, but the 4033 is not an LDC; the diaphragm is a little over 1/2" - around 5/8" actually.

LDC's are usually considered as 1" diaphragms and larger. It's a pretty good electret mic.

My apologies...I simply mean that they're not pencil condensors...I assumed that they were LDC's because of their size.

Nonetheless...my buddy uses them (small, medium or large diaphram) and loves them as overheads

Out of curiosity Harvey - is the 4040 an LDC or MDC?
