Okay, heres the situation. My old DAW was running off a computer my uncle built for me a year or two back, which worked perfectly for awhile. The motherboard was some MSI board running with the SIS chipset, but then out of nowhere one of the harddrives failed, and when i got an old one in there my Aardvark was no longer compatiable with it. I emailed the Company to see what was up, i found out that SIS chipsets arent compatiable with the Q10s, I was really bummed, considering it used to work.
So this is why im posting, i considering myself pretty technosavvy, but when
it comes to building computers for AudioEngineering, im pretty much clueless. And with all the harrddrives and motherboards out there today, i just get angry whenever i look through pricewatch.
I pretty much just want to custom build it so it can handle all the stuff id be throwing at it (basic demos, maybe even professional use down the line.)Not to mention that you can save a ridiclous amount of money going that route. So what i need is, a new computer! I got 700-800 dollars to spend on it.

I dont care if its a Pentium based system, or an athlon based system. As long as it gets the job done with ease, ill be satisfied. any help i can get would be very much appreciated.

Do you need a monitor and other peripherals? Or are those all taken care of?

All of that is completly taken care of.
I just relized i put in the thread topic 600-700, i really want to spend between 600-800.

If you get an Asus P4P800 mobo, you can build an 800fsb P4 system, with a gig of quality ram, 2 hard drives, a quality video card & dvd burner for under $800.

You could probably build cheaper on amd though

I was thinking about going AMD, for that reason alone. but if its more stable to get a pentium based system, id defiently get that. but im sure its a highly debateble subject.

all i really need, is just a motherboard and and a CPU, id prefer if you could be as specific as possible. i got everything else completly taken care of, well maybe not the fans.

a user on here is happy with a amd 2400+ mp processor.
apparently only 77 bucks. i would look seriously at that as value for money.
if money no object i would consider a amd 64 once the price comes down a bit. one user has reported to me from the states a tremendous boost in performance using the amd 64. apparently cakewalk have some graph
on their site showing how amd is even blowing away G5's. other users are reporting dual opteron happiness. but for value i'd stick with that mp2400+.
77 bucks cant be beat imho.
add a couple of hard drives that are fast and 512 ram and your away.
KEY point - make sure you ask the soundcard manufacturer what chipsets
and motherboard are recommended.
you didnt mention what multitrack software you use.
i highly recommend magix music studio. new version just came out called 2005 with enough features to keep anyone happy for yrs including 64 audio tracks and unlimited midi tracks. only 70 bucks.
peace.

Hey - Another vote for AMD! I have been running a $40 AMD proccessor for quite a while w/o any trouble...In fact, until recentley, I could smoke just about any pentium (can still beat a pentium 3.0).

Mine's even way overclocked, and not a problem.

Good luck.
