Hey guy's, need a few sugg please. I'm fixing to throw out the electric drums for a live kit and needing some advice on mic's to buy. I already have an at40/50 couple of 58's and 57's, but was thinking of getting maybe a matched pair of say at40/33's and just using maybe the three condensers in the room. Will I need a special "kick' mic or not? Anyway's 600.00 is the budget, but my friend thinks we should get 5or6 57's to mic the kit. This is very new territory for me so any advice will be extremely helpful, Thanks...David

I think that it's more important to get a coupld of good overhead condensers than buying 57s all-around.

here's a nice $600 drum micing setup:

1 AKG D112 (kick) - $210
1 SM57 (snare) - $90
2 RodeNT3s (overheads) - $300

I can get a pretty good drum sound with these 4 mics. You can add on tom-mics when you get some more cash

I agree totally (although the paired AT4033 would be a great idea), and when you do get some more $$$ look into some Sennheiser E604s for the tom mics, and leave the SM57 on the snare (you can't beat it on snare!!).

Thank's guy's!

Thank's for the input, I did a little more research and think I'll add a couple more hundred in the pot and get the two 4033's and a AKG D112 kick mic, already have the 40/50 and two 57's and 58's so that ought to get me going for now. This kit (haven't seen it yet) is an old Roger's set of drums...anyone familiar with these? They may be crap for all I know, but there's a story behind them I was told that they were the original set of drums that "little Ricky Rickardo" Keith Thibodeaux (I love Lucy) used in the band "David and the Giants" anyone ever heard of them? Don't know if it's a lie or not and don't care as long as they sound decent enough. Thanks for the info!!

Beaver..uh I mean Wally:D...you wouldn't want these I'm pretty sure, but if they were mine I'd gladly send them to ya free of charge!!

If it's the David and the Giants I've heard of, it's a little known Christian Rock Act with David Huff and a few other people...

I think they had a few hits in the 90's...I'd tell you more, but I quit listening to Christian music when I realized no one had any talent like Guided By Voices

That's the band

Yeah it's the same band. I remember them back in the early seventies though when they weren't doing Christian music. Their a pretty solid band Christian or not, for sure.
