I have about $550 to spend. I am really really thinking about buying some "decent" recording gear. I am just using my internal soundcard right now.

I looked at the Saffire LE earlier this year, but decided not to get one... now I am looking at it again. I will also need a few mics.

Saffire LE is $300

So... with $250 left to spend, what are some good choices on mics? I guess a SM-57 would be the first choice, since I will be recording my guitar (electric). I have also thought about the Naiant MSH-1 mics for the acoustic guitar. Probably just 1 mic for right now. Then that leaves a vocal mic. Fill me up with knowledge please!! =D

Thanks

If you get a nice LD condenser that may work well for vocals and acoustic guitar then maybe grab an SM57 like you said or maybe a Sennheiser dynamic for the electric. The good thing about the Sm57 and condenser is that you could blend the two while recording guitar. You may not need a third mic. If I were you I would go to a music store and maybe ask those guys what they think and maybe theyll plug a mic in for you and let you hear it.

Good luck

Well I would also consider looking at other sound cards used on ebay. You can get more for your money that way. I assume that you need onboard preamps so I would also look into used prices on some 8 channel cards that have onboard pre's. Presounus firepod ect.

Your on the right track with the mic's. Start with the 57, a boom stand and a pop filter and see how far that takes you. It may do fine for your vocals. You never know until you try.

I don't think you can go wrong with the mhs mic's for the acoustic. Unless your room is stellar go with the cardioid version.

If you have enough money left over look into a used AT-3035, Studio projects c1, etc. Just please stay away from the MXL990. SAve up if you have too. There is also cheaper studio projects & AT mic's The B series & the at-2020. I can't speak much for them other than the get pretty decent reviews.

There is a peavey 3 mic adaptor on ebay that lets you use one mic stand to set up a xy with one mic stand. I just got one to un-clutter my drum overhead set up. Cheap & Handy.

Good Luck
