Though getting paid is always better, the following are advantages/benefits you can get when you work for FREE

EXPERIENCE

If music making is new to you, by working together with any artists, you can anticipate what kind of things they are looking for, how they mix tracks, how they rearrange their songs , which overall polish you as an amateur producer. Demonstrations and Hands on are the best way to learn. You will grow more especially when you encounter challenges and overcome them.

NETWORKING

Work with other people for free and they can be your spokes people in the future. Interested people will ask “Yo who made that track?” And your name will be mentioned. People then will have more interest to work with you. These people will be your costumer and you can get paid.

PORTFOLIO

If you just started making music, you might have nothing to show off. So concentrate on achieving that experience as well as building up a work portfolio. I can agree with this 100%. A lot of newcomers (and unknown artists/producers in general) just anticipate monetary gain without anything to show for it. Working for free may not seem attractive, but most of the time the people you work with will keep coming back and refer you to others who need product. I know guys who charge 100's of dollars for beats and can't sell any because they have no name (or the credentials to do so).
 
Yep, agreed. Good post. Although looking to achieve these things whilst getting paid is even more powerful.
 
As a add

You will achieve payment for these when you gained the skills needed in these areas. That is why pro-bono work when starting out is so important

But really this is great advice for anyone starting out. Especially experience.
 
That's how I have been doing everything so far and it has given me so many opportunities. I have been exposed to so many different genres and have learned so much from just experimenting. It is really easy for me to find people because I am in college and so many people are musicians.
 
.....just as a side note. Networking is not so important but relationships that you develop through people in your network is!
