I am looking for a soundcard with about 4 mic XLR inputs-preamp,phantom power, about 4 1/4 jacks inputs, and MIDI In/Out, and some sort of output. Any recommendations? I prefer an internal drive with a face, but will consider anything. Thanks in advance.

Also, I was looking at the Firepod. Which is the closest thing I've found so far, a little pricey, but nice. How would I go about multitracking (for drums, mainly), with that sort of hardware?

I don't know what your price range is, but the MOTU Traveler would fit your I/O requirements. I have an 828mkII which I love, but was a little jealous when the Traveler came out after I already had my box.

What do you mean by an internal drive with a face?

What kind of recording software are you using? With any kind of USB/FW interface that becomes your sound card and as long as the recording software recognizes it, you select inputs/outputs through your software.

How familiar are you with setting up recording software? I didn't want to get into the specifics of setting up a multi-track session if you already know how to do that, or do you need to know that type of information?

Price range is up to about $600. The MOTU Travelor, eh? I'll look that up. By an internal drive with a face, I mean something similar to a CD drive, but with an audio interface as opposed to a CD drive. Mounted inside the computer, but not only as a PCI card.

I recently bought Sonar 5, I had previously been working with Sonar 2. I never did multitracking though. So I should be able to select different inputs for different tracks and record at once? I'll have to mess around with it. I'm unsure how to do it exactly, though.

Yeah that's the basic idea. I think Traveler's retail brand new for around $849, so you might be able to find a used one in your price range. I am using Sonar 4 PE at home, by the way.

Basically (and I'll use the Traveler as an example) Once you install the drivers, Sonar will recognize the traveler as its sound card. When you create tracks in Sonar you will have to set the inputs and the outputs for those tracks. So you can choose the 4 mic inputs on the traveler as an input each for 4 tracks in sonar and record all of them at once.

That's a very basic example/overview.
Make sense?
