488 cassette issue.

I have a porta.. 488 mk2. It (cassette deck) seems to work (FF-RR) untill I press play then it starts to engage then disengages all play functions as if I pressed the stop button. I pulled the cover off & everything looks intact but I don't know much about cassette decks. Any ideas???
 
Hi, asde33. I, too, have just joined the forum and have the same issue with my 488 Mk II. In my instance it is the capstan belt that needs replacing. However, this appears to be easier said than done since exhaustive internet searches have turned up nothing. I have emailed Tascam (15th July) and an awaiting a response. I will give it a few days before starting a topic about sourcing a replacement.

Capstan belts for 488 for $4.25 on e-bay right now ;)
