A friend of mine picked up one of each of these 8 track mixers (cheap!) and the only decent levels he can get out of them is via the headphone out! I told him he's crazy to use that but he's convinced it sounds better than the main outs just because it's louder. I realize these boards only offer -10 unbalanced outs but he's going into a TASCAM CDRW 5000 through the -10 unbalanced inputs so it shouldn't be off that far. All of his cabling is pretty shabby but I still don't think that's the culprit. He already owns another 450 and that one acts the same way.
What's going on? Does he have it somehow miswired? He's using the 8 channels hooked via snake to a TSR-8 reel to reel via the direct outs for recording. And back in through the line level ins for mixdown. We tried the bus outputs, the stereo master outs, the monitor outs & the 2-trk outs. All of them provided a really low signal level unless he jacked the inputs to where they sounded unreasonably noisy.
