Hey thanks for the reply. Didn't think I would get one on this question.
I recorded the original track (my friend's song) to track 1 on my four track so that I could use it for my reference to play over. I planned to just use the remaining 3 tracks for guitar (at most 3)... in some songs I just used one track (a 57 on the amp... kind of irrelevant but whatever).
So the funny thing is I did the first song and took the 4 track to his house where he has his pro tools setup. We dumped it into his computer, and the timing was fine on it. He was able to line up my guitar with his tracks in pro tools and it synced well.
So, I took my 4 track back to my "studio" to record the second song. I did the same thing I did for the first song. I recorded the original song onto track 1 from a CD, and then moved on with overdubs on the remaining 3 tracks for guitar. When I was done, I took it back to my friends house and the timing was off this time. I don't know if it was too fast or too slow because he was in charge of the controls at his house and I couldn't tell what the hell was going on in pro tools (I hate that shit anyway

)
He was able to do some timing correction in pro tools to make the guitar usable, but it did not sound right. I figured that maybe when I recorded to track 1 that the pitch control had moved a little. And to be honest, I did not have the time or want to deal with playing DJ with my 4 track and syncing it to my friend's computer using the pitch control at the time (perhaps what I should have done in retrospect.. .but oh well).
So, he continued to time correction on the guitar in pro tools the best he could but it sounded like shit in the end. Actually I haven't heard all of it, but I'm sure it's totally effed.
My big problem with the 424 MKII is that there is no way to turn off the pitch control. You can put it up dead center to hope for the best, but it doesn't really even lock on dead center, so it was just a pain in the ass to deal with.
I just got a tsr-8 and that has a switch that turns the pitch control off, so that solves the problem in my mind. That and probably never working on a project like that again. That is why I like tape more. As long as the whole song is recorded on tape, I could care less if it is slightly out of pitch to be honest. I'm not a perfectionist, and I like the "f**ked up" aspects of recording to tape. I think that is what makes it fun. Computers are boring for making music I think. Not for me. Anyway, maybe that gives you another idea of what could have happened, or maybe what I could have done to resolve the problem. Thanks for the reply. Is your name ira? Mine is too if so. Peace man!
