I am new to recording and just purchased a 424mkII and am having problems recording. I am following the manual to record on track 1 and it seems to record ok but I cannot here anything when I try to play it back.

I have my guitar plugged directly to the recorder on track 1. I have the input on track 1 switched to mic/line. I have the fader for track 1 turned all the way to the left. I turn the record selector to the BUSS L position and get a blinking light on track 1. I press record and play and the light on track 1 goes solid and I start playing. When I finish playing I press stop and turn the track 1 selector switch to safe mode.

When I try to play back I change the Track 1 input selector to the tape position. I set the Effect 2 / tape cue selector to the tape cue. I turn the tape cue monitor selector to the left. I have the output going to my headphones. I press play on the tape. I start to turn the effects 2/ Tape cue nob on track 1 to the right. I do not hear anything at all out of the headphones.

If anyone could give me any help I would really appreciate it. I purchased the recorder from ebay and it is used but I don't htink anything is wrong with it. I think I am just missing a step somewhere. Thanks in advance.

I don't own a Mk II, but I do own a MK III,

On mine you DO NOT switch the input selector to "Tape" unless you are recording the track(s) onto a tape deck or in your PC.
Try leaving it on "mic"

Good luck !

You're doing everything fine to monitor track 1 off tape. You don't need set the input selector switch to tape if you use the monitor switch and monitor knob. You can set the selector switch to tape however, but if you do, it's best to keep the tape cue knob all the way to the left (off). Then use the fader to control the levell and the pan knob for proper panning. Also, make sure your master fader is up.

Are you getting any action on the level indicator for track 1 when you record? When you record, is there anything coming through headphones? If not, you need to check your guitar, amp, adjust your trim, make sure the master fader is up, etc. You should get some sort of level activity on the meter without the machine actually recording. I usually arm the tracks to direct instead of bus. One less stage.

If you do get levels during recording, then it's probably a matter of the master fader being down or the L-R monitor switches not being set to the right.

I cleaned the tape head very good and bought some new tapes and everything is workign ok now. I feel really stupid but at least I learned something. Thanks for everyones help.
