424 mkIII mixing question - channels 5 & 6

If I'm recording drums with two mics to one track, overhead in channel 1 bussL to track 1 along with channel 5 kick drum bussL to track 1, what setting does the mic line on channel 5 have to be on?? the options are 1 - 3 - 5? also if I was recording bass along with acoustic gtr to track 4, bass being bussR into channel 4 and acoustic gtr being bussR into channel 6, what setting should channel 6 be on?? 2 - 4- 6? I guess my question is, When I tried to mess around with this technique, no matter what mic/line input i selected they all sounded the same, how do I do this properly? thanks

I'm guessing 1.

Have you tried 4?
 
From the MKIII Manual.....pretty confusing huh? I guess you can borrow the xlr input from channels 1-4 for channels 5 & 6. I don't know why but thats what it says.

MIC/LINE 1/3/5 (channel 5): Allows you
to choose whether the signal
handled by channel 5 comes from
either of the MIC/LINE inputs of
channel 1, either of the MIC/LINE
inputs of channel 3, or the MIC/LINE
input of channel 5.
MIC/LINE 2/4/6 (channel 6): Allows you
to choose whether the signal
handled by channel 6 comes from
either of the MIC/LINE inputs of
channel 2, either of the MIC/LINE
inputs of channel 4, or the MIC/LINE
input of channel 6.
 
It's for the times when...

you'd want to use the XLR inputs instead of the 1/4" jacks on channels 5/6. Channels 5 & 6 can "borrow" the XLR inputs off 1/3 & 2/4, respectively.

Think of the time (hypothetically) where you've already recorded your 4 tracks onto tape, and you want to do a "mixdown". Typically for mixdown, all the channels 1-4 are set to TAPE to perform the mixdown function. Then by chance, you also want to record an extra vocal or cowbell, adding these parts live-to-stereo during the mixdown phase, (along with your 4 prerecorded tracks). This feature enables you to use Channels 5 & 6 to "borrow" the XLR inputs off the Channels 1-4, while 1-4 actually perform the "TAPE-RTN" function at mixdown, (1-4 set to TAPE). It just gives you a lot more flexibility with using your existing XLR mics, as opposed to requiring 5 & 6 use 1/4" input jacks, exclusively.

There could be other times where this feature would come in handy, but IMO that's the main one,...

to add more cowbell! :eek: ;)

My question as well

I am trying to figure that one out on the MKIII as well. Im recording drums. I have the Bass geetar on ch.! and the geetar on ch.2.

I am running the oh thru a behringer 4 input because of the Phantom power I need for the oh. I was thinking on running the berry into the subinput for outboard mixer and recording on 3 and 4. As Im not to happy with the berry mixer I was going to mike the rest of the drums on 5/6 and I cant figure it out either.
 
Sounds like the bass and git are already on tape right? in that case, you can plug the two outputs from your berry mixer into two of the channels, and the two other drum mics into the other two channels. Doesn't really matter which ones. This will have no impact on the already recorded stuff. Then set the record input to buss L and R, respectively for tracks 3 and 4. Just pan your 4 inputs to your liking to set your mix. Just make sure the input switch for tracks 1 and 2 are set to safe, and you should be good to go.

[Edit - I'm assuming you have 4 drum mics, right? 2 from the mixer and 2 directly from the mics? I wouldn't mess with 5/6. You shouldn't need it, unless you have MORE than 4 inputs]

great info and totally answered my question. Great timing, and thanks a lot because the situation is exactly like you described. As soon as i can find the manual to my digital camera I will be posting pics of my newly built studio.
