Thanks for the reply, but it is a much larger problem than a pot. It is something major with the whole left channel. The store I brought it to COULDNT fix it. Its not that they didnt want to, its that it is too complex of a problem to even diagnose. It isn't just the pan, its the WHOLE channel, no monitor, no pan, no anything.

I have a 424 MKII, and I was wondering if anybody can shed any light on the subject of the left channel suddenly disappearing. It is simply not there. It worked fine for a long time, then it just didn't pan one day. I took it to a audio repair shop and they told me it is too hard for them. The only place locally able to fix it charges $45.00 just to look at it. HELP!

Hi, sdre!
When I bought a used 488 for my friend and the headphone jack didn't work I called several audio repair shops. Like you, I was given high prices just to check it out. Rather than have them give me a song & dance after the fact, I ordered the part from Tascam, had it shipped overnight and then had the cheapest one simply replace it (a chance, I know) and it worked out! My suggestion is, if you feel very sure the pot needs replacing, to do what I did - get a good estimate and, if it seems fair, let them do it. By the way, my jack cost $2.50 + $7 to overnight it, but it was worth it, since it was fixed in one day!. I hope this has been of help to you and that you'll soon be recording again.
