I've been using my 424 MKII for 3 years now, and love it, yet to date there are aspects of it I don't fully understand, despite a dozen manual readings. For ex, the inputs labeled 5-6 and 7-8 and the little switch under them labeled L/R? What's that all about? I use these inputs, but on a hit and miss basis. They work, but I don't really know how they work.

Another silly question: what exactly do the 2 Monitor switches do? They seem to work fine in either position, so what am I controlling with them?

I guess it's like a car: it gets you where you want to go, even if you don't know how every part works. But if anyone has insight, please post......thanks.

The inputs labeled 5-6, 7-8, are stereo inputs. Similar to the other 4 inputs except they don't have the eq and fader. They're routed either to the L-R bus or to the "monitors". They also double as effect returns. You use the effect send to patch to an effects box and then return from the box into inputs labeled 5-6, 7-8. You can adjust the amount of signal going to the effect with the effect send knobs in the channel strips.

The 2 monitor switches do a few things. The switch for effect 1 will switch the effect monitoring on. The switch for effect 2 will switch whether effect 2 is monitoring "off tape" or monitoring the effect 2 return. I hope that makes sense......
