had my 424 back to the shop twice..same problem....anyone ever deal with this one?

the prob is a sound like a record skipping during playback.not to use an oxymoron, but it is regularly intermittent. First they solder some rca jacks...no change...then they replaced the capstan motor...no change....finally, they sent me a new power unit, no change.

the unit sounds superb for a few hours. after it warms up, the noise comes back.it is not my speakers.it is not static caused. heads are spotless, demagnitizied. pinch roller is spotless. I took it to my neighboors to make sure it wasnt coming from any cell phones, amps, extraterrestrials, etc. same problem.

the good news is the noise does not record on mixdown. only playback. it can be a recorded tape, a brand new blank tape, doesnt matter. It is there when I use headphones, and or monitors.

I have given up and will just have to deal with it. the unit has less than about 20 hours of use.

its just something which drives you crazy while your taping, and i have to compensate for it whilst miking an amp, etc.

when i use the dbx, it doesnt matter if its on or off, same problem.

anyone ever deal with this on a 424mkIII?

clevo....thanks

Man, that sucks. I don't have any advice, other than it seems like you might need to cut bait, and buy a new one. It's really nice to have 2 4-tracks, anyway, cuz you can do more creative, and less destructive bounces. Then you would only need to use your bad machine for the periodic bounces, and it could sit in the closet the rest of the time. I know you've put a lot of money into that thing. What a rip.

Ooh, that's bad news,...

especially for such a low use machine! I'm at a loss to explain it, but since I heard something similar on one of my machines, it might pay for me to revisit that particular machine some day.

Sounds frustrating, for sure.

Can you clarify exactly what you’re hearing? Does it sound like a vinyl record skipping, popping or dropout?

Definitions:

Skipping - Part of song will repeat same point in song more than once in quick succession (skip-back) or will jump forward, bypassing a point in song without playing it (skip-forward). Normally accompanied by popping sound.

Popping – You hear a popping sound… may or may not disrupt the music depending on how loud the pop is, other than making a sound you don’t want.

Dropout – (similar to skip-forward without a pop) The music just disappears for a fraction of a second.

With the cost of used 424's versus the cost of repair time being what they are, you should buy a new (used) machine and sell that one for parts (or save it). My opinion anyway. I just picked up a 424mklll for $75, and that included shipping costs. At those prices it just isn't worth the hassle. Sorry about your problem. :(
