4 XLR

Hey, I am not too up to date on audio interfaces so...

If I am looking to record from 4 XLR microphones... How would I go about doing this? All of the XLR input audio interfaces I have seen only have 2 XLR jacks... am I missing something? I would like to be able to break these 4 mics into separate tracks.

Okay found what I need, but it is a bit too expensive for me...

I found the Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96...

But I can't afford it... :(

Are there any cheaper alternatives?

cheap soundcards with decent preamps are hard to find, with no less than 4 preamps even harder.
A better alternative is a soundcard with 4 line inputs plus 4 separate preamps. That can either be a mixer with direct outs or 4 channels of outboard preamps.

Any thoughts on what products to get in order to to do that method? Sorry, my recording experience is very basic.

Well, I am on a pretty low budget... The Aardvark Direct Pro 2496 is $500. I need to spend less than that...

Well... You can't get much lower than $79,- for each 2 channels of M-audio audiobuddy... Plus the cost of a soundcard with 4 inputs.. On ebay there is a Delta 44, Buy Now for $150,-. Good deal.

Something like that?

And just one more question...
Do you think it is necessary to do this?
The only thing I would need it for is drums.
Which, really I don't NEED to separate other.
Should I just get a higher quality soundcard and
not worry about having a lot of inputs?
I usually just record from my mixer...

The Delta 44 is a very good soundcard, especially for that price.
So you already have a mixer? Can't you use its preamps? Even if it has only 2 outs, you can cut corners by buying just one audiobuddy. If it has a direct out or an insert point on each channel, you don't have to buy separate preamps at all.
No, you don't really need to record drums to 4 separate tracks but it makes it a lot easier to get the mix right.

Is that what those insert jacks are? They are outputs?
See how little I know... Ha ha...
I always wondered what those were for...
