Hi,

I've just started using my old Fostex X-12 again, but I can't seem to get any volume when recording acoustic instruments with an SM57.
I have to turn the mic gain to full and even then the recording volume is quite low. Is this because the Fostex cannot adequately amplify
the SM57? Do I need an additional preamp?

Most likely. Do you have another mic you can check the recorder out with?

Well that was a another question I had. Is there a better high quality mic I can use for this purpose?

I think GC sells a 2 channel preamp that also has phantom power for 50$. Do you hear any crackling trough the mic. this could be a sign of a bad solder joint in your mixer.

I think a preamp is your best bet. I'm a recent convert to preamps for acoustic instruments and I kind of wish I'd used them years ago. Just for the level of sound and clarity you get, you can't go wrong. I know that the X~12 has an on board preamp. All my on board preamps [Tascam 488, Akai DPS 12i, Zoom MRS 8} are good, but they all need a little help......

Have you tried to remove the plastic outer case to see if it just needs a little tlc? Most amp repair people do this on the side if you don't feel comfortable doing it your self.
