I have a fostex xr-5 four track tape recorder. I would like to know is there a way to use this recorder as a pre-amp so I can record guitar and acoustic piano through the unit and into my home computer. If so is this recommended or would it be better to record directly to the computer using some kind of interface? My main object is to be able to make a CD recording of guitar an piano duets. Also what kind of microphone would I need to mike the guitar amp? Can you recomend a place to shop for the gear? something online or would it be better to go to a store? What software would I need to get the audio into the computer and be able to manipulate it from there? thanks for any help.

Hey Wildman,
I can't tell you anything about computer recording, cause I still roam with the dinasaurs. (how do you spell that??)
I found out through this forum that an AUDIO TECHNICA 4033 is a great mic for acoustic instruments and vocals. I'm getting ready to order my own soon, with an ART TUBE pre-amp. I think the total will be around $400.
I have had success with SWEETWATER SOUND. www.sweetwater.com
Hope this helps, kmar

Yeah you can use your 4track as a preamped mixer & plug it right into your soundcard ( Line Out or Monitor Out on the 4-track into LINE IN on the soundcard).

I still use my Fostex X-26 for this purpose from time to time. You'll be much happier than recording to tape.

Of course you won't have phantom power and the pres on the 4-track won't be great...I'd recommend looking into the ART Tube MP which runs for $100 (single channel) or $220 (dual channel).
