should i focus on like 4 hot songs to do shows and promote myself with and sell it for
$5, work on the rest of the traxx in the meantime, or should i drop like 10 on a cd perform like 4 or 5 and sell it for $10? doing a whole cd is really draining. i really want to get out and start working the crowd. i'm thinking if i can put a lot of energy and creativity in a few songs it will be better than rushing through 12. i know that it's a personall preference, but what would you guys do?

bassically what i'm asking is, what are some techniques to promote myself, get paid at the same time, and have fun in the meantime?

To answer your questions - promoting yourself is easy

Getting paid while you do it? - um.. that really depends on everything.

Having fun? - That's your choice.

Instead of trying to get paid, work on getting known locally (if you're choosing that route) - get some people who like your stuff, and don't be afraid to set up a website with *free* downloads of everything you can afford to put on there of your own music.

Getting paid is a matter of placing *value* on your product. If nobody knows who you are, and haven't heard much of your music, 'getting paid' won't happen for a bit.

just my 2 pentz, and worth just about that.

keep an open DEMAND of SUPPLY

Give'em 5 or 6 songs for $5
with 10 or more tracks they'll have to much materials in hand and propably won't remember to pick a favorite song unless it's stratigically placed e.g. #2 or #5 or among the last 3 (Only applicable to full length Albums)

As for Promotion any publicity is Good so get out there with your sounds

Blessings

Whatup playboy

1. GET PAID(SHOULD BE YOUR MAIN FOCUS)........that doesn't mean initially, but pretty quickly.

1a. First of all, most people you approach don't take what you do as a "REAL BUSINESS", but if you opened up a burger joint called "Joe's Burgers" they would. So put it in their head that you are about business and that it's serious

2. We Americans take sh*t for granted. Which means the more free sh*t we get, the more we feel sh*t should be free. The more you give them free stuff, the more they will take it for granted that you will always give them some free stuff. Like some of this broads and sh*t, talking about "Hey ty are you going to give me a cd when you release" just because i gave them a sampler cd with the snippets and told them we are finishing up the whole album.

3. The Lawyer that was more prepared always won his case.
The more music you have completely done(music mixed down and mastered w/ lyrics & you have the mixed down and mastered instrumentals to do shows.) then you can do whatever.

I got some other words of wisdom, but i'm at work, and with this war sh*t going on i've been hella busy.

So i'll get back to this tonight fellas

Well depends my man. I would do the Demo and put i out there for free so you can get your name in the streets Try to hit some clubs and some djs with free copys of your demo. Then If you want to make money you may want to do more songs then release the LP. But wait until the buzz kicks in because if there's no buzz you won't sell many. One of the best places to distro your demo would be College campuses and College radio. They always show love to the underground. I even got an interview on the University of Maryland's Hip hop night on there radio station. At the time though it was for a compilation that I was on for Hot Sounds Records. I plan on hiting them up and a few more colleges as well as do shows there. That's where my audience is. Once you can generate a buzz and create an audience for your music selling it is easy. We sold 250 copies of our compilation 250 weve been giving out for free. It wasn't just me though we had about 12 artists at the time and all of us were hitting 3 different states hard. I have more I plan on giving out for free around other areas in MD. So I can create more buzz and hopefully continue to build my audience so you guys will one day hear my shit on some mix tape and be like damn i know that cat.

much love

man, yall came through with some pretty powerfull ish. i soaked in everything like a sponge. a read something a while back about promotion. it was in the marketing forum. someone said that a good idea would be to put your demo on the 3 1/2 inch disks and have the cd cover like a buisness card. man i love this forum.

i like the idea of floppy disk for the demo to be handed out for free . IMO it could a 50 50 hit or miss , some people got shitty computer speakers so the tracks might not be well heard and appreciated and they might not rush to go and listen to it as they should get to their puter first
but if it is a cd i jump in the truck and boom (Maden like) pop it in and it's on plus most consumers will have their prefered system on wheel

FB i see you went from that Fellow to that Pimp (when was the graduation :D :D :D :D ) lol

Easy

I'm always wary about picking up free stuff 'coz I know that alost all of the time there's a salesman right round the corner.

So you'd have to have a pretty decent thing going on for me to pick it up, and then I'd have to be blown away by it like "Holy shit!" to go out and buy it.

If I wuz u I'd get as many tracks done as possible and have enough for an album, maybe surplus. Gop around performing about 5 songs and make sure they're all banging. Maybe get a website with say the first minute of a couple of songs on and 1 whole song, maybe have it so you can have one song playing on the website/maybe just the chorus of it. Try to sell people CD's when u play and set-up a way to sell CD's online and I think u've got summit going.

What u need 2 make sure is that every song on ur album u love as it is. If u don't love it as it is then improve it or if it's just ok then it means it is just filling gaps (Take snoop's "Tha Last Meal", that album was tight, but they filled loads of gaps up with crap, e.g. "Stacey Adams" - now that wasn't even a song!). People will respect u a lot more if every track is shown true love and is banging rather than putting 2nd rate stuff on to fill up gaps. People need to be able to listen to it and think "Damn, that shit's bangin'!" then they go and tell their homies and they're like "U gotta here this, man! There ain't a bad track on it!" People are much more likely to take u seriously if they find it hard 2 choose a favourite + if they can listen through an entire CD thoroughly enjoying each track (I know I do).

Phew! That was a long post!

NB: (I knew I'd missed summit) For the last part - that's why "The Chronic" was so sucessful.

L'espion Noir

Just an idea I've been toying with... you might wanna use it if you're ready to go public soon.

Buy a bunch of those little CDRs that are the size and shape of business cards. I think they hold up to 50meg (Just enough room for a 4.5-5min song no?

Put your best work on it in audio format and print your business card info (from your above ad) on it ....

... hand em out to local bands and tell em. "Here's a sample of what we can do in the studio... give it a listen and let your ears decide. Than give me a call."

i see what you were saying about the floppy, it would be a hit or miss thing.

i'm feelin that

yeah, abyss i feel that. i just knew that it would be a lot of dedication to complete an lp with top shelf material. i know a smaller goal like 5 songs would be easier for me to focus on. i see what you mean about having enough done for an album, because if any a&r is interested, i'm pretty sure they will love it if you are ready for pressing. flossy, chalin, muzakal, all yall came with some good ish.

>>>a yo L'espion Noir, i was talking about the 3 1/2 inch cd's

question of habit i saw 3 1/2 inch disk and automatically assumed it was about floppy

but thanks for clearing that for me

L'espion Noir - FB i see you went from that Fellow to that Pimp (when was the graduation ) lol

i wasn't really questioning your judgement, i soak up all the advice that you give :) , i was trying to figure out if i had my info right  . i'm not familiar with the small cd's, although i have seen them in stores. do you think the cd/business card is a good idea?

Those small joints don't play(fit) in everything and I have found the full size cdrs to run for a cheaper price... For shit like what you where talking about is why I posted that 100 for 10 cdr post... Niggas around me fucked off on that... I'm thinking we got 1800 when we only got the 800 i copped... I don't know if they still doing em like that at OFFICE DEPOT but it's a few licks on the net here and there. Reason i'm bringing it up is a 1000 run going hand to hand with about 25% of you beggin (cuz fools are cheap and spoiled by the bootleggers now) for the sells and the rest as just some promos to catch a few connects that'll put your ass on the streets real nice. More like feeling out your crowd... Making some connects... Getting some recognition... Paying some dues... Making some fans... Putting a bug in that ear.... Yadda yadda... 5 songs on that tip will be a nice foot in the door... Just don't expect a burn out to hold your ass... Keep working once you get it done cuz it's only a warm up exercise.

Peace...

nice lookin lazi. back to the drawing board. i just came off of hiatus, now it's time to hit the lab again.

yup to what Lazi said

those little cd's i'm not feeling them , not in what you trying to accomplish, which is to reach out to a massive audience and IMO you'll want something that we all got like a cd player as oppose to the fancy mini disk or "something else" player
