4 mics to record drums...

O.k. here's the list of my massive arsneal of mics lol

Studio Projects B1
Shure Sm 57
Shure Sm 58
Shure Pg 58
Shure Beta 52
Marshall Mxl 603's x2

I have a 1202 mackie mixer which has 4 mic pre's in it, so I can only run 4 mics at once. What would be the best way to mic a 5-pc drum kit for rock music?

I'm thinking beta 52 on bass (duh) panned to the center, Sm 57 on snare panned a bit to the left, and the two 603's as sterio overheads, one panned left, one panned right?

Am I on the right track?

Any other ways to mic the kit without me spending any money?

P.S. I'm using an Audiophile 24/96 into Sonar so I'm limited to recording two seperate mono tracks at once or one sterio track

I recommend keeping the snare in the middle too. The overheads will give you the stereo.

Put the overheads with the same distance to the center of the kick.

Also try the B1 on the same distance as the overheads in front of the kick (measured to the kick side) instead of the beta 52. Maybe it's better for catching some of the drum set sound from under. Don't put it too close and use a pop shield. The power of a bass drum can be dangerous for a large diaphragm.

sorry about that, dude...I had to take a stab at Bruce.....

for insight, i totally agree with your mic choice....try overheads the way Mike Hedges described in "Behind The Glass" as the "Glyn Johns way"....2 overheads, both 2 1/2 sticks length from the snare, the 1st over the floor tom looking toward the snare and the 2nd directly over the center of the snare, then adjust for phase.....the kick drum would go in front of the kick drum.....3 mics....viola.....

of course, youll be adding a snare mic....you overheads should capture most of what youll be needing for the snare....youll use the snare track if it needs more snap or such since youll have more control of it there than in the overheads.....
 
O.k. cool, thanks for the help, I'm gunna give it a try.

I wouldnt mind an a/d convertor but I'm flat broke :(
