I've been looking for a backup 388 and then this comes along.

The price is right and the seller is in Red Bluff just 40 miles from Chico where I live, so I thought I could save shipping on this hog.

The pictures looked fishy though, like I've seen them before, so I contacted him. He said the pictures were indeed from other auctions. He went on to say that its in perfect condition and that I could pick the machine up in person and save a bundle.

This seems like a no brainer. Now, where will I quickly yank $300 from.

I have a hard rule not to bid on listings that have stolen pics or text from other listings. 1) It's a violation of eBay rules 2) It's no different than having a listing with no pics at all.

Keep in mind the seller is violating eBay rules and Internet copyright provisions. If eBay is notified of such violations they will remove the listing.

It's also a violation of Theft of Services statutes in many states. I have my pics and text stolen a lot, because I write very descriptive and educational listings. What really galls me is when a seller is charging someone else a consignment fee to list their stuff and then steals someone else’s pics or text without asking.

It’s a lot of work to take pics and research a product, so it really pisses me off. One large well-known music store in New York kept stealing my descriptions for things they were selling on consignment, even after two warnings. After the third time I sent them an invoice for my selling fee. They paid it after I threatened them with legal action for theft of services.

It is one of my pet peeves, and if you ask me a very bad sign when a seller’s first act is unlawful and unethical.

Granted, some inexperienced sellers do it innocently, and haven’t really considered that they are benefiting from someone else’s time and trouble.

I agree with you completely, so maybe I should forget it.

On the other hand its a steal, and a chance to inspect a machine doesn't come along all that often in these parts. So I might be willing to forgive the sellers ebay practices if he'll allow me to view it before purchasing.

I was just pointing out that the seller might not know that yanking clips from other auctions is against ebay policy, as a low feedback score would indicate. If and when I see the seller in person, I plan to clue him in.

Personally I think it's worth the short drive to check out the 388. It may turn out very positively. You never know.
