3630 mod, can I switch back and forth?

in the 3630 mod in the latest taeop issue, it simple calls for removing two jumper wires. they suggest just clipping it in the middle, thus interupting the contct. This leads me to believe that I could have a switch or button that would allow me to switch between a bridged jumper wire and an interuppted? Something inserted right in the middle of the bridgewire. how would I do this? The wire only appears to be a single conductor., so what kind of switch would I use. Everything at ratshack has 3 pins.

Which page of the Tape Op? I can't believe I would have missed this.

You could use any double pole on/on switch. There are two wires (acording to the issue which I have right in front of me), so one for each pole.

Easy.

And speaking of that issue of TapeOp, damn but Carol Kaye is cool. She played the fucking Mission:Impossible theme song.

What does the Mod accomplish? I've got a 3630 that I run on my surround system for late night TV... (Hate those booming commercials)... never sold it because I couldn't get enough to make it worth while... Is there hope for this thing??

LOL. So you can switch back to that "classic" 3630 sound on demand? :)

the 3630 uses the same chip as some DBX compressors. But this jumper wire is used for the limiter, but in turn also limits the dynamic and frequency range. when you cut the jumper, it disables the gate, but opens up the compressor a little bit more. Its not really noticable at lower compression levels, but once it gets bigger, you can tell the difference between the un-modded and the modded.

I saw that. In the article about it, they suggest adding a switch in there if you want to go back to using the gate. I would think a couple of on/off switches would do the trick. Clumsy, but it would get the job done.

True!
The problem with modding the 3630 according to tape-ops article is not only do you decrease the dynamics that you can control, you also increase the amount of unwanted audible artifacts a db or 2 that accompany the signal you are proc'ing. What you sacrifice for more enhanced peak limiting and levelling control is loss of the gates which IMO is the unit's "best" aspect (it's gates can provide some adequate control on "hisssss producers" & tail-clipping
of 'Verbs).
Upping the thresh/widening the attack range via modding may give the proc'd signal a uniquely, wierd tone/effect during compression (along with a S/N ratio that might be unbearable) that can be suitable for some and unuseable for others. Also after modding is done, you might as well write off running kits thru the unit as again, gates are rendered useless.
But what the heck, give it a shot and see what you get. I also own a 3630 and the ONLY thing I use it for is to control the hisssss from my "canned drummer".
